Robert Lewis Henderson

Robert Lewis Henderson
June 23, 1933 – April 23, 2020
Robert Henderson, 86, of Bryan, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020, in Bryan. A Memorial Service will be at 11 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. Cremation services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.

Bob was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 23, 1933 to George and Ruth Alma (Gusland) Henderson. He was one of two children born in this marriage. He enlisted in the US Army during the time period between the United States involvement in Korea and Vietnam. He ended up working on computer targeting systems for ground to air missiles. He used to joke at shooting guided missiles at drones being pulled by bombers, and never hitting one. During his enlistment in the Army, he married Edmunda Philips in 1957. Their only child was born in 1962. After leaving the Army, he went to work for Bendix Corporation, which was later bought by Control Data Corporation.

During the 1960’s through the 2000’s Bob led a very active life, Racing Cars in the Illinois Valley Sports Car Club, he was a member of various tennis leagues, played golf, and ran in several 10 K races; most of these activities he was with Eric. Eric was born in 1962. Bob rode motorcycles for 50 plus years until he was 84 years of age.

Bob worked as computer engineer with Control Data for twenty-nine years when he retired. He continued to work for the City of Peoria, Illinois teaching computer use to city employees. In 2004, dad and mom moved to Hertford, North Carolina, to live closer to my family in Virginia. In 2011, I retired from the City of Norfolk and moved to Bryan, Texas for my retirement job. With the close-knit family ties our family shared, dad and mom moved to Bryan in 2012. Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2009. My dad was able to care of mom until 2018. As dad’s health began to decline and mom’s condition worsened, she began living at a facility, and dad continued to live in Bryan with his cat, who hated everyone but him. My dad would pass away exactly two months short of his 87th Birthday from complications following hip surgery.

His parents, his brother, David George Henderson; all precede Robert in death.

Surviving him are his wife, Edmunda Philips Henderson; his son, Eric and wife, Wanda Henderson; his grandchildren Bryan and wife Angie Isles, Ashley and husband Paul Tollison; his great grandchildren, Brian and wife Amanda Farrow, Dylan Farrow, Hayley Farrow, Peyton Isles, Paul Tollison, Emma Tollison; his great-great grandchildren, Cameron Brooks, Ella Farrow; and his sister-in-law, Susan Henderson with other relatives and close friends.
