Tommy Mcgary

Tommy Ray McGary of Bryan, Texas went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 after a brief stay in the hospital with COVID.

Tommy was born on April 5, 1941 in Raymondville, Texas.  He was the son of Ollie and Maggie McGary.  He was raised and attended school in Lyford, Texas.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Baxter McGary.  Together they have three children: Tammy (Vernon) Oehlke, Curtis McGary and Kenneth McGary; five grandchildren, Brooke Oehlke (fiancé Cort Pennington), Justin (Amber) Oehlke, Cole McGary, Cheyenne McGary, and Hunter McGary; and great grandchildren Carlie, Kash, Weston and Colton.  Tommy is survived by one brother, Olen (Joan) McGary and numerous nieces and nephews who he was very close to.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Marcella (Leroy) Haught, infant sister Anna Jo McGary, infant brother Robby Allen McGary, and William (Meredith) McGary.

Tommy served in the United States Marine Corp.  He was a sheet metal journeyman in Dallas for several years, before going to work for Valley Telephone Co-Op in Raymondville, Texas.  He joined GTE Telephone Company in Robstown, TX and later retired from GTE in San Angelo, TX.

After retiring, Tommy & Betty traveled throughout the United States for several years as full-time RVer’s.

Tommy is a member of First Baptist Bryan and former member of Glenn Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo, TX.  He loved the Lord and his family and was an excellent role model to all.

Time spent with family and friends was one of his greatest joys.

The family would like to give special thanks and recognize to Dr. Covington and the nursing staff on the 5^th floor Covid unit at Baylor Scott & White in College Station, not only for the care they provided to Tommy during his stay, but for the care and compassion shown to his family.  We will always remember your compassion and kindness.
