Thomas "TJ" James McKnight

Thomas “TJ” James McKnight, 82, of Jonestown, Texas, passed away on December 13, 2024. Born on June 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, TJ was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, son, and friend. His warmth, kindness, and engaging personality touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

After graduating from high school, TJ joined the U.S. Air Force, where he specialized in aircraft electronics. Stationed at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, he met the love of his life, Linda Thixton-McKnight, at her father’s Harley-Davidson shop. Their deep love story began there, and together they embarked on a lifetime of adventures.

After completing his service, TJ, Linda, and their young daughter Kelley relocated to New York, where TJ worked as a Customer Engineer for IBM. However, after four years in the Northeast, the McKnight family felt the pull of Texas once more. With a new baby, Scott, the family packed up their Volkswagen bus and drove across the country to Midland, Texas. There, they found joy in raising chickens, rabbits, horses, and goats, even opening a pet shop along the way. The family later moved to San Angelo, where TJ could indulge in one of his greatest passions—fishing.

In San Angelo, TJ continued his work with IBM, which would remain a significant part of his professional life. Eventually, he transferred to Austin to work at IBM’s manufacturing plant, where he became known for his talent in process improvement and engineering. His contributions were substantial, earning him several patents. After 25 years of dedicated service, TJ retired from IBM, but his passion for innovation didn’t stop there.

In retirement, TJ pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by founding his own consulting firm, where he continued to excel in process improvement and manufacturing engineering. He also worked for Universal Instruments and later Cypress Technologies, where he progressed from the shop floor to a leadership role. Throughout his career, TJ was respected for his expertise, his drive for excellence, and his unwavering commitment to his work.

When he finally retired for good, TJ devoted his time to his family and to enjoying the peace of Lake Travis, a place that became a cherished haven for him and Linda. Known as a master conversationalist, TJ never met a stranger. His laugh was infectious, and his ability to connect with others made everyone around him feel seen and valued. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, or simply spending time with loved ones, TJ’s presence brought joy and comfort to all.

TJ is survived by his son, Scott McKnight and partner Rae Anne Springer; his daughter, Kelley White and husband Rayford White; his grandsons, Bryson White and wife Chelsea, and Wesley White and wife Amanda; and his three great-grandchildren, whom he adored; sister Jean, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Helen McKnight, and his beloved wife, Linda McKnight, who was his partner in life and love for over 50 years.

A memorial service celebrating TJ’s life will be held in the spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, an organization that was close to TJ’s heart.
