Samuel Marrero

May 11, 1933 — January 20, 2022

Samuel “Sammy” Marrero, 88, of College Station, passed away on January 20, 2022. Samuel will be laid to rest in his home city in Puerto Rico. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Centers of Bryan-College Station. Funeral and burial services in Puerto Rico are in the care of Funeraria Javariz of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Sammy was born on May 11, 1933, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to Antonio Marrero and Susana Rivera.  He was the youngest son in a family of 5 boys and 1 girl.  Like his older brothers, Sammy’s passion was baseball, and he quickly made a name for himself as a successful baseball player in Puerto Rico.  A pitcher with a mean curveball, he was later drafted to play Triple-A Minor League baseball in the U.S.  Following his baseball career, Sammy pursued his love for traveling the world and assisted others with achieving the same through his career as a travel agent.  He was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.

Sammy loved spending time with his wife of 39 years, Melida; his daughters, Melissa and Melinda; and his Yorkshire Terrier, Britney, his trusty companion of nearly 18 years who sadly passed away in November.  You could always find Sammy either cooking the most delicious meals for his family or eagerly watching his beloved Red Sox and engaging in passionate post-game chatter with his daughter Melissa.  Christmas was his favorite holiday, and Sammy made sure his last Christmas with his family was the most memorable yet.  He cooked a mouth-watering Christmas turkey, played with the family’s new Yorkshire Terrier puppies (Gigi, Bella, and Louie), and danced one final dance with his loving wife.

Preceding Samuel in death are his parents, Antonio and Susana,  and his brothers, Efrain, Tonin, and Eli.

Survivors include his wife, Melida Rivera; daughters, Melissa Marrero and husband Adam Tenke, and Melinda Marrero; brother, Benjamin Marrero and wife Aida Gonzalez; sister, Minerva Marrero and husband Antonio Gonzalez.
