The bugle has sounded, and Bob Smith is making his final journey home. He is joining his wife of 69 years, Lela, in heaven. He will be missed. Our family is saddened by his passing, but we know that his place is beside Mom. Dad’s greatest joys were his family, friends and all things Texas A&M.
Robert was born in Conroe in 1932 and raised in Austin. He was a proud member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets class of 1954. It was here in Aggieland where he met the love of his life. Following graduation, he accepted a commission in the United States Air Force for 12 years serving our country as a proud military veteran. After leaving the service, he joined Dow Chemical Company for 28 years so that he could return to Texas and raise his family. Being a caring father and husband came naturally to him and he and Lela raised 3 children. Bob was a great role model to his family and shaped the values we all share. Dad sent all 3 kids to college, then helped with his grand kids. Nothing was more important to him than his wife and family. He is survived by his son Craig Smith, and daughters Cathy Smith Hughes and Karen Smith Cope. His grandchildren are Amy Auld, Sarah Murphy, Matt Psencik, Sarah Kate Smith and Lauren Smith, as well as 6 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Nov 23, at 10 am at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas.
