Raymond Gene was born on March 6, 1935 in Goose Creek, Texas to Cullen and Edith Gaylord. Growing up in the Tri-Cities area, he attended Anson Jones Elementary school, was a Cheerleader at Horace Mann Junior High and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Raymond was a proud member of the REL class of 1954, serving as a Varsity Football manager and setting State records in Track and Field. He took a “one way” Corps trip to Texas A&M in the Fall of 1954 and continued his studies at the University of Houston.
Early in his career, Raymond worked for the Harris County Tax Office, and later as a Draftsman for many companies in the Petrochemical industry in the Houston area. After 50 years in the industry, he retired from TurboFab in 2007.
Raymond’s family has a long history in the State of Texas and the Houston area. As a sixth generation Texan, he was proud of his heritage as a descendent of Augustus Chapman and John Kirby Allen, who purchased land in Texas in 1833. The Allen family was influential in the early days of Houston, in 1836 purchasing 6,600 acres of land along Buffalo Bayou and founding the city of Houston in 1837.
Raymond was an avid Aggie fan and before retirement was active in the Baytown A&M Club where he was a member of the Cooking team, served as President and was the recipient of the Dutch Holland Aggie of the Year award. Upon retirement in 2007, he moved to College Station and enjoyed cheering on the Aggies at Kyle Field, Reed Arena and Olson Field.
When he was not cheering on the Aggies, he enjoyed model building, growing roses and collecting model cars.
Raymond was a member of the United Methodist Church all of his adult life at Park Place UMC Houston, St. Paul’s UMC Baytown, Grace UMC Baytown and A&M UMC College Station. At A&M Methodist, he enjoyed being a member of the Golden Rule Sunday school class.
For 57 years, he was married to his surviving spouse, Mary Ann Cox Gaylord. He is also survived by two children, Alan Ray Gaylord (Robbin) of Baytown and Lecel Gaylord Baxter (William) of College Station, son-in-law, Clyde Miller, grandchildren Hannah Aerts Long (Casey) of Denver, Colorado, Sarah Aerts Cunningham (Ben) of Memphis, Tennessee, Grace Baxter of Richmond, Virginia, Jacob Baxter, John Baxter and Hope Baxter of College Station.
Raymond was preceded in death by his father Cullen Gaylord, his mother Edith Allen Gaylord Harbour, his step-father Glenn Harbour, his daughter Kay Aerts Miller and his son-in-law Brad Aerts.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Marcel Lechin and Traditions Health for their help and care in the final weeks.
