A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Ray passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023. He was 91 years old. He was born in Stamford, Texas on March 3, 1932. Ray was the third child born to Sam Westergaard Hansen and Birtie (Drury) Hansen. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1949. He was given a full football scholarship to Abilene Christian University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from ACU in 1953 and a master’s degree in management from the University of Virginia. He served three years in the military active reserve and two years of active duty during the Korean conflicts.
He had a successful 39-year career with Exxon USA and was named his alma maters Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in 1992. He was a member of the undefeated ACU 1950 Wildcat Football team and was inducted into the 2000 ACU Sports Hall of Fame. Ray served on the ACU Board of Trustees for more than 30 years.
After retiring from Exxon, Ray worked at the family-owned businesses of Tiger Holdings and Desperado Distributing Company and both were sold in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Ray met Nancy Charlene Waters while they were both attending ACU. They were married on January 23, 1954. Ray and Nancy had been happily married for 62 years at the time of her death on November 28, 2016.
They became the parents of three children: Kathy Nan Askins (and husband J. Lee of College Station), Ted Hansen (of Austin), and Tim Hansen (of Port Aransas). The Hansen’s lived in 28 different homes in their 62 years of marriage. Both were active in the churches of Christ in each city in which they lived.
Following the death of Nancy, Ray met Ricki Henry at the church gospel meeting. They were married August 1, 2017. They were happily married for 6 years and 3 months. They were both members of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Birtie (Drury) Hansen, his two brothers Henry Hansen and Charles “Woody” Hansen, his sister Delarece Hansen Cooper and his wife Nancy Waters Hansen.
Ray is survived by his wife Ricki Henry-Hansen as well as his children and spouses; Kathy and J. Lee Askins of College Station, Tim Hansen of Port Aransas; Ted Hansen of Austin. His grandchildren and their spouses will also mourn his loss, Clint Askins of Boulder CO, Grant Askins of Boulder, CO; Abigail Askins Peck (and husband Preston) of Ft. Worth; Shannon Hansen McCoy (and husband Thomas of Katy, TX, Shane Hansen and wife Alyssa of Liberty Hill, TX, Alec Hansen of Austin, TX, Maxx Hansen of Port Aransas, Ava Hansen of Port Aransas and Olivia Hansen of Port Aransas. His great-grandchildren include Harley Rae Hansen of Liberty Hill, TX and Hadleigh McCoy of Katy, TX.
