Oscar M. Cortinas Sr., 86, of Bryan, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 17, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Oscar M. Cortinas Sr. was born the son of Francisco and Juanita M. Cortinas in Santa Maria Nuevo Leon, Mexico on March 27, 1936. He had seven brothers and two sisters. The family moved to Monterrey, Mexico. This is when at the age of 9 Oscar fell in love with the game of baseball. He continued developing his skills and moving up in the ranks.
Oscar moved to the United States when he was 24 years old, during that time he started playing baseball for the Bryan Bee’s. While playing baseball at Travis Park he met Olga the love of his life. The two soon married on September 10, 1961. Oscar and Olga were married 61 years and raised their one son Oscar (Oppie) Jr.
Oscar came to know the Lord as his personal savior while at a church service. Under the leadership of Pastor Osmundo Corrales, the two spent time together cultivating a friendship that would last for a lifetime. Oscar was given several opportunities to preach. Thus, developed his love for the ministry. He was licensed to preach the gospel in 1986.
During his lifetime, he had several careers – baseball player, mechanic, and pastor. He loved helping his son in the family-owned business this brought him great joy. Loading trucks, maintaining equipment, or willing to lend a helping hand. Oscar was always quick to offer a kind smile, to pray with someone when they needed it. Oscar was a loving devoted husband, father, and Papaw. During baseball season you would find him watching his beloved Astros and Texas Rangers. He always enjoyed long conversations about the plays and talking about his predictions for the post season. Another passion of his was looking forward to all the special family occasions, where you would find him waiting patiently for his desserts. Especially his sweet bread (pan dulce) and many other confections.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Olga, his son & daughter-in-law, Oscar & Annette Cortinas Jr., Grandchildren, Megan Cortinas and fiancé TJ Medina, Zachary Cortinas and fiancé Didi Carlomagno, Great Grandchildren, Aubree Medina, Isaac & Lillian Cortinas, two brothers, Homero & Francisco Cortinas.
Oscar will always be remembered for his faith in the Lord, his strength in his beliefs and his dedication to his family. We will miss him dearly and long for the day when we will be able to see him face to face but until then, we know he is rejoicing with his Heavenly Father.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of Cancer Clinic, Sotera Health, and Brazos Valley Hospice. For their excellent care, love and compassion that was shown to Oscar and family.
