A big blues band is playing songs of joy in Heaven to welcome Nancy Sue Hervey Conlee home. Surrounded by her loving family and the prayers of friends, Nancy passed peacefully August 13, 2024 at the age of 79. She realized in this life a profound peace and an assurance of her legacy. Her sweet spirit is dancing freely now – unbounded by earthly restraints. Nancy was a dedicated mother, teacher, sister, daughter and dear friend to so many.
Nancy Sue, as she was known in her youth, was born on October 14, 1944 in Crockett, Texas. Nancy moved with her family to Victoria, Texas where she spent her formidable years and graduated from Victoria High. She formed lifelong bonds with classmates, affectionately called the Ya-Yas, who have gathered annually since graduation. She moved to the “big city” of Dallas to attend SMU earning her undergraduate degree while having good times with roommates, sorority sisters and friends.
Nancy moved to Bryan, Texas in 1976 and taught for decades in the Bryan School District bringing heart to her work. She specialized in Speech and Language Pathology. She relished supporting kids of all ages to develop life-long skills for communication and self-worth. Her legacy lives in all those lives she touched.
One of her greatest joys in life was her daughters, Aimee & Abbie. She loved to tell everyone about her girls and her fierce dedication to them provided a strong foundation for their lives.
Nancy spent decades as a congregant of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Bryan. She loved her bible study group. She volunteered for Voices for Children and the Pre-Natal Clinic always wanting to help others who needed the support. She could often be found tending to her beloved Christmas Catus named “Baby”. Nancy found great solace in working in the yard bolstered both by her love of keeping things tidy and her connection to nature that she first found in her mother’s vegetable garden from childhood.
She lived her faith in action and taught us all what it means to care for a friend. Nancy was a powerful advocate and encouragement for friends – cheering them on in times of joy and steadfast during times of challenge.
She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Albert E. Hervey, Sr. “Paw-Paw” and Marguerite T. Hervey “Granny”. She is survived by her daughters Aimee Elizabeth Conlee, and husband Ric Murphy, Abbie Conlee Wertheim, and husband Steve Wertheim and beloved granddaughters Marlena and Gwendolyn Wertheim and her brother, Albert E. Hervey, Jr and his wife, Diane Hervey.
