Mary Lou Bruce

August 15, 1936 — January 28, 2023

Mary Lou Hamil Bruce peacefully passed from this earth and was united with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 28, 2023 in College Station, Texas at the age of 86. Services for Ms. Bruce will be in the care of Callaway Jones Funeral Center, 3001 South College Avenue in Bryan, and will be held at 11 AM Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Callaway Jones Funeral Center.   Brother Tim Owens will officiate. There will be a gathering of friends and relatives following the service at the same location with snacks and drinks provided. The family will have a private farewell at a later date.

Mary Lou was born in Temple, Texas on August 15, 1936 to Mildred Ethlyn Jenson and Jullian Forrester Hamil.  After high school she met the love of her life, Gary Bruce. They were married on January 17th, 1959. Soon after their family grew to four with the addition of their cherished children, Cary and Dawn. Gary’s job brought them to the Bryan- College Station area in 1976, and then became a permanent home for their family.

Mary Lou “Granny Lou” was a saint in the eyes of those who knew her. She displayed a character that most seek and never find.  Her love and caring attitude for everyone was always on display seeking opportunity to serve and make someones day better. She served and gave a piece of her life every chance she got. Giving her time and limited income resources was her purpose and joy in life. Her eyes, heart, and schedule were always open for someone in need. From serving in the churches she attended over the years to volunteering for Meals on Wheels.  She was always available.  Her strong Christian faith was on full display, trying to get the names of all those caring for her at her last location. She wanted to get them all gifts for taking care of her.

Jesus said,  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth. . .But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven. . .For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’”  Everything Mary Lou accomplished here on earth ended as a treasure in Heaven. Because that is where her heart was.

Mary Lou was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Gary Lee Bruce, and sister Patsy Ruth Hawkins.

She leaves behind a son Cary Bruce. daughter Dawn Bruce Murphy and husband Bobby, grandson Garrett Murphy and wife Brynna, grandson Hunter Murphy and fiance Morgan Sewell, sister Peggy June Berryhill, and especially what sustained her these last few months, her great-grandson Judah Robert Murphy. She is also survived by  numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Accent Hospice and a very special nurse Micki Montoya Gutierrez.
