On Friday, November 8th, 2024, Mark went to Heaven to be with the Lord. He passed away peacefully at home in College Station with his mom, dad and brother by his side. His courageous fight with cancer is over and he is free of the shackles that bound him here on Earth.
The world was made a better place on November 23, 2013 when Mark Kennedy Massey was born in Shenandoah, Texas. Shortly after he was born he and his family moved to College Station where he spent the remainder of his short but remarkable life.
Mark loved with his whole heart. He was absolutely hilarious and he was the happiest when he was making others smile and laugh. He made friends with everyone he ever met. He gave world-class hugs. He loved his little blue stuffed elephant, Max and his dog, Mila. He was the kindest, gentlest and most loving soul. He loved to build his Lego sets and play baseball. He taught himself to solve a Rubik’s cube. He loved root beer and Mexican food. He loved to travel and his favorite trip was to New York City at Christmas time. He loved the beach yet he wanted to live where it snowed when he grew up. He was going to an engineer or a chef.
Shorty after his 10th birthday Mark was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of brain cancer called Diffuse Midline Glioma. An unwilling warrior, he fought the battle of his life with grace and remarkable courage. Mark was never one for attention but in the face of this battle he got a lot of it. While cancer ultimately took his life, it is not what defined his life.
Mark proudly graduated from Pebble Creek Elementary School in May 2024 with all A’s. In April 2024 he earned the Bravery Award from the Turn It Gold foundation for his courageous fight. He inspired everyone who knew him or of him to treat every day as a gift and to be strong in the face of the toughest challenges. He wanted to be baptized to declare his faith and his love of God and Jesus. Despite not being able to speak or see at the time, he was baptized in September 2024.
Mark will be remembered for his gentle soul, his generous spirit, his witty sense of humor and his infectious laugh. He was a lover, not a fighter. Until he had to be. And when he had to be he was the bravest, toughest warrior. In his short (almost) eleven years he has left a legacy that will live on long after him.
Mark is survived by his parents, Bryan and Ali Massey, and his older brother, Jameson Massey; his maternal grandparents, Belinda Boyd and husband Kim of Friendswood, Texas, and Randy Kennedy and wife Serita of Cypress, Texas; his paternal grandparents, Gail McElgunn and husband Mike of Clinton Township, Michigan, and Dan Massey and wife Jennifer of West Bloomfield, Michigan. He is also survived by his loving aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
