Malcolm Ogle Bane Jr.

Dr. Malcolm Ogle Bane, Jr. was born September 10, 1935, in Burgaw, North Carolina, to Mina (Taylor) and Ogle Bane. Most of his early life was spent in west Texas, where he graduated from Odessa High School, Class of 1953. He attended East Texas State in Commerce on a tennis scholarship. In college, Malcolm was a cheerleader, student body president and, most importantly, met the love of his life, Joyce Phillips. They married in 1957 and set off to Fort Worth, where he completed his BD, ThM and ThD at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1969, Dr. Bane accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church College Station, serving until 2000. Prior to FBCCS, Malcolm led churches in Scatterbranch, McDade, Carlsbad (New Mexico), and Rio Vista. After retiring, he served as interim pastor at El Calvario (Bryan), FBC Navasota and Providence Baptist (Caldwell). A skilled communicator, Dr. Bane frequently left his congregants feeling the sermon was tailor-made for them.

Malcolm was a sports fan, fisherman and five-time gold medalist in racquetball at the Texas Senior Games. He enjoyed movies, music, reading and keeping up with current affairs. Dr. Bane was always up for a trip, whether to the Holy Land, Europe, Glorieta, Fort Worth or Salado. A perpetual student, he spent several summers at Princeton Theological Seminary. Malcolm was curious, quick-witted and progressive-minded.

Dr. Bane was a devoted family man, never missing a tennis match or track meet, famous for his Christmas stocking searches and hosting family dinners at Jose’s. But his greatest joy came from being Granddad to his granddaughters.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce, son Kirk (Penny), daughter Kimberly (Shawn) Parish and his two favorite people, granddaughters Elizabeth and Caroline Parish. Malcolm is also survived by his brother Bill (Alma), brother-in-law Tom (Martha) Phillips, and numerous family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters-in-law Frances Lamb and Sue Tawater, and his dear friend Dr. Harvey Hoffman.

Malcolm’s guiding principle was grace. He left a lasting impression on countless others through his message and practice of God’s goodness and mercy. Dr. Bane often said, “It’s not because we are good but because He is good.”

“My grace is sufficient for you…” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
