Lm "Scratch" Hall

November 20, 1927 — May 7, 2024

LM “Scratch” Hall, Jr. 96 years of age, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in Bryan, Texas. Scratch was born on November 20, 1927 in Abernathy, Texas to the late Lockhart and Ada Hall. Preceding him in death were his precious wife of 72 years Wanda, parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Junior turned to “Scratchy” when his primary means of defense was to scratch his five older brothers. As he grew older, he became Scratch to all who knew him. Scratch graduated as salutatorian from New Deal High School in 1946.

In 1950, Scratch married his sweetheart, Wanda Manning in Albuquerque, New Mexico and soon moved to Petersburg, Texas where they raised their two daughters Karen and Janis. They loved living in the small, family oriented community for 31 years. Scratch and Wanda then made Bryan College Station their home in 1981, remaining there until their passing.

Scratch accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 25. He and his family were very active in the Petersburg Church of the Nazarene. For many years Scratch was the Sunday School Superintendent and led congregational worship with Wanda as the pianist/organist. He loved working in the church and cherished praising Jesus by singing hymns and songs with his family and friends.

Scratch was known as a man who could fix anything from appliances to vehicles and irrigation motors. From 1948 to 1963 Scratch worked as a mechanic for Petersburg Implement. In 1963 Scratch started his own business, Hall’s Parts and Service. After selling the business in 1981 he and Wanda moved to Bryan College Station where Scratch worked for Vertex Equipment Company and Bailey Oxygen and Tool until his retirement in 1992.

Scratch’s competitive spirit was always evident, from ALL things sports to fishing, cards and dominos. After playing basketball for the New Deal Lions he was offered an athletic scholarship to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. However, the Hall family farm had to take priority over college. He was an avid fan of the Petersburg Buffaloes, never missing a Friday night football game or basketball game. He fondly remembered his Petersburg domino hall gang, a group of buddies who played dominoes for hours throughout the week. What fun these guys had with their quick wit, camaraderie, and competitiveness. After moving to Bryan, Scratch faithfully supported Coach Merrill Green’s and Coach David Greeno’s Bryan Vikings. His love and passion for golf resulted in his serving as a golf marshall for the Bryan Municipal Golf Course. This enabled him to continue to play golf well up until his early nineties!

Scratch loved and cherished his family. He leaves behind his two daughters and their husbands: Karen Hall Nave and Mike Nave of Peoria, AZ; Janis Hall Greeno and David Greeno of Bryan, TX. A legacy of love for the church and passion for sports is passed on to his five grandchildren and their spouses: Shawn and Carissa Nave of Tucson, AZ; Brant and Kristin Nave of Camarillo, CA; Kristin and Jason Allen of Austin, TX; Jance and Rebekah Nave of Waco, TX; and Tiffany and Ben Hamlin of Killeen, TX. PawPaw Scratch has 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who dearly love him. They would all say that “Heaven became an even sweeter place when Pawpaw/Scratch arrived (maybe even a bit more competitive)”! We are assured that he is “walking in the light of the Risen Lamb” with his beloved wife and is leading a Heavenly choir in singing “Jesus is the Sweetest Name I Know.”
