Linda Jean Scott, 70, of Bryan passed away peacefully on October 19, 2021, at Hospice Brazos Valley with her daughter and grandsons by her side. She had suffered a stroke in September after a long battle with diabetes, heart disease and peripheral artery disease.
Linda was born on October 22, 1950 in Baltimore, MD to Leon and Melvina Ruth (Holland) Scott.
After graduating from Southern High School (Baltimore) in 1968, Linda started working at John S. Connor and began her 44+ year career in freight forwarding. She worked in the industry and completed major projects in both ocean and air freight for several companies in Baltimore, Savannah, Georgia and Houston, Texas before retiring in 2013. Her work took her to many countries including: Israel, Chad, England, Turkmenistan, Chile, Cameroon, and Bahrain to name a few. Her 50th birthday was celebrated during a business event at a castle in Germany. She also lived in Baku, Azerbaijan, for several months while shipping oilfield equipment to the area after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Growing up in very humble circumstances, she never imagined that she would have been able to do what she accomplished and see as much of the world as she did.
During her retirement, Linda volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Houston and at Houston Northwest Memorial Medical Center. Her volunteer work not only satisfied her, but also gave her some great friendships that continued even after her move to Bryan in 2019 to be closer to her daughter.
Linda enjoyed being the Grand Marshall of the holiday “pots and pans” parades for her nieces and nephews when they were young. She loved her grandsons, who could do no wrong in her eyes. They attribute their brand-new angel to helping the Astros make a comeback just a few minutes after her passing. They eventually went on to win game four of the ALCS that evening. She crocheted, loved crafts, visiting with friends, and celebrating. Everything.
She is survived by daughter Lisa Burton and husband David of College Station; beloved grandsons Austin Pitts and Cameron Pitts of Midland; sister Karen Follin of Flour Bluff; many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews; her cat, Skud (now in Midland); many cousins, friends, and former colleagues who became friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Ruth Scott; brothers Charles Scott, James “Jimmy” Scott, Melvin Scott and Thomas “Tommy” Scott; and her “Best Friend” and companion of more than 20 years, Dave Spangler. Linda and Dave’s ashes will be comingled and interred together at College Station Memorial Cemetery.
In keeping with Linda’s wishes, interment and her celebration of life will be private.
Linda’s family would like to thank the staff and residents of Watercrest at Bryan for making her a home here. They would also like to thank the staff of Hospice Brazos Valley; CHI St. Joseph/Encompass Rehab; the Neurology ICU and team at CHI St. Luke’s in Houston.
