Linda Carol Halter

February 12, 1942 — January 1, 2024

Linda Lowrey Halter, 81, mother, daughter, sister and friend passed on January 1st at her home surrounded by her loving family around her.  She was born on February 12, 1942 in Baytown, Texas at the beginning of WWII.  Her father James Lowrey worked with Texaco company pipe line divisionShe lived in many places in Texas and Oklahoma with the family settling in Wichita Falls, Texas in the 1950’s. Linda often mentioned Comanche, Oklahoma as her favorite childhood place.  She graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High in 1960.  She attended Midwestern State University and was a member of Sigma Kapa Sorority.

Linda was blessed with having an older brother Jerry, a younger brother Mike and a younger and very close sister Diana.  Her mother Vivian Saye was a Collen County native, an excellent seamstress, chef and devoted reader.

In the 1960’s while attending College she met Gary Halter.  After dating for several years, they were married in 1963 in Sacred Heart Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. She and Gary moved to College Park, Maryland where Gary earned his PhD and Linda worked for the university system.

Upon their return to Texas, Gary was a professor in Political Science at Texas A&M University and Linda finished college and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English.  Upon graduation she worked for the university as an editor for the Thesis office and for the Architecture Magazine published by Texas A&M University.

Linda was an avid reader and loved to cook.  She and Gary were members of the gourmet club.  They loved traveling the world with a particular fondness for Italy where they spent several semesters with study abroad students from the university.

Linda and Gary spent many summers at their lake house at Camp Creek Lake.  Later, they escaped the hot Texas summers at their home in Angel Fire, New Mexico.

Linda was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Saye (Betsy), both her parents, her brother Jerry and her daughter-in-law Melissa.

Linda is survived by her husband, Gary; daughter Katherine ‘Katie’ (Scott) Smith of Sarasota, Florida and son William (Lee) of Lewisville, Texas; Granddaughter, Chloe Mitchell of College Station, Texas; Sister, Diana (Harry) Carlson of Lucas, Texas and brother, Mike (Elaine) Lowrey of Arlington, Texas and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Aggieland Humane Society.

Funeral services for Linda Halter will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 5, 2024 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan. Interment will take place at College Station Memorial Cemetery.
