Kenneth Russell Ewald was born to Russell and Dorotha Ewald on March 16, 1941 in Mission, Texas. He fell asleep on November 23, 2021 and is awaiting the return of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A Celebration of Life service will be held at The Silver Center, 510 E. Court, Seguin, TX 78155, at 11 AM on January 23, 2022.
The Ewald family moved to Kingsbury, Texas when Kenneth was four years old. He attended Kingsbury elementary school. While in Prairie Lea High School, he played basketball and six-man football. After graduation in 1959, Kenneth worked in various occupations, primarily in construction running heavy equipment. When he was working on the construction of the Fayetteville Power Plant in 1985, he met Sharlene Samsel Havrda and they married on October 18, 1986. In 1991, Kenneth began work at Texas Transportation Institute, TX A&M University System, and retired from there in August, 2006.
Kenneth put God first in his life and followed the example of the Lord Jesus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and pitching horseshoes. He also loved to dance and play his bass guitar and was very good at both. Although Kenneth had no formal training on the bass guitar, he was a very gifted player. He played with The Tall Texans and The Pfeil Brothers bands in many local venues, including the Bluebird Inn in Kingsbury. He also backed up well known singers such as Carl Smith and Freddy Fender when they performed at The Farmer’s Daughter in San Antonio. Kenneth was able to play his bass along with the Country Classic music channel for five years after his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, even though he was no longer able to plug it into the amplifier or turn the amplifier on. This brought him, his wife and others much joy.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Dorotha Ewald, brother Harold, brothers Lee and Ralph Ewald and their wives, Marie and Norma, respectively, his sister, Doris Ewald McIver, and her husband, Jerome, grandson Trey Herber and granddaughter Zaida Flores.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Sharlene, three children from a previous marriage, sons Kenneth Lee and Keith Ewald, daughter Cheryl Ewald Michalczak, step-daughters Davene Kopecky, Nancy Morgan, and Sherry Acosta, fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Ewald Dement, Laura Ewald Rose, a sister-in-law, Nelda Ewald, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
