Justin Oliver “Sonny” McSpadden, Jr., born June 4, 1935 to Justin Oliver McSpadden, Sr. and Mary Ann Woodward McSpadden, left this Earth on July 9, 2021 at his home in Bryan, Texas. A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held at the Blooming Grove United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 2:00 pm. He will be interred to Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove at a later date.
Sonny was born and grew up in Blooming Grove, Texas and graduated from Blooming Grove High School in 1953. After attending Navarro College for two years, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Texas A&M University in 1957. He then served in the Army Reserves before going to work for the Soil Conservation Service. In 1973, he moved his family to Corsicana to manage the family farm.
Sonny married Martha Faye Watson on May 21, 1960 and enjoyed over 61 years together living in Dallas, Athens, Denton, Corsicana, and Bryan, Texas. He raised his children as Christians with high moral standards to practice loyalty, dedication, and value hard work. Sonny loved his family, friends, his farm, and everything about Texas A&M.
Sonny is survived by his loving family: wife Martha, children Beth Dees and her husband Jeff, Grace Harper, and James McSpadden and his wife Caroline; brother Danny McSpadden and sister Carol McSpadden; grandchildren, Jason Dees and his wife Ellie, Justin Dees and his wife Katelyn, Ellen Mackey and her husband Luke, Corey Harper, Jessica Harper, Cate McSpadden, Victoria McSpadden, and Jack McSpadden; and great-grandchildren Ava Moquett and Kyle Dees. He is preceded in death by his parents Justin and Mary Ann McSpadden, Sr.; sister Shirley Frederick, her husband Joe, and their son Alan; and sister-in-law Jackie McSpadden.
