June Whitcomb Pinnell passed away peacefully on April 16, 2023 at the age of 93. Funeral services will be at A&M Methodist Church, 417 University Dr at 3pm Tuesday April 25th, with graveside service following. There will also be a visitation on Monday, April 25th from 4pm-6pm at Callaway Jones Funeral Home, 3001 College Ave in Bryan, TX.
June was born in Bristow, OK on November 30th, 1929. She grew up a small town girl, daughter of James Austin and Flora Mae Whitcomb. She loved to roam the woods and creeks of Bristow with her older sister Julie and reveled in the large family gatherings that took place frequently on her mother’s side, the Douglas family. In 1945, the Whitcombs moved to the oil and gas fields of Andrews in West Texas to accommodate a new job for Austin. With now 3 year old baby sister Janet in tow along with the rest of her family, June excitedly took on the challenge of the family move, and in what would be a trademark for the rest of her life, was undaunted by these new and exciting changes. It would be in Andrews where June would meet her true love and life long companion of 72 years, Charlie Pinnell, the tall, handsome high school track and basketball star. They were married in Andrews on May 27, 1950.
Before her marriage, June had a brief college education at Texas Tech University and the University of Tulsa where she majored in music, a life long hobby and passion which lives on in the legacy of her children and grandchildren. She majored in voice and while still in high school she toured with her school singing group, The Harmonettes, and was honored to sing in New York City with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.
June also developed a life long passion for travel after frequent family road trips which culminated in a 30 year career with A&M Travel here in College Station, retiring in 2013 at age 83. Over the course of her career she traveled all over the world and helped many clients to do the same. If you ever needed to travel, those in the know called June.
Of course her family was number one to her and after moving to College Station in 1958, Charles and June raised their 4 children; Glenn, Chuck, Peggy and Patty with June always guiding them with a sure hand and loving voice. She was affectionately known as “Mom” to her kids or as “Grandma” to her 4 grandsons; Rene, Mike, Kenny and Bryant and as “Grandma June” to great-grandson, Remi. There were many family vacations spent at their mountain home in Ruidoso,NM, with lots of time spent hiking, skiing and picnicking all over the state.
June was a 65 year member of A&M Methodist Church, where she continued her love of music as a faithful chancel choir member and loved the many gatherings and fellowship with her beloved Sunday School class, the Golden Rule.
The Lord called June home to reunite with her beloved husband Charles and son Glenn, her beloved parents James and Flo and sister Julie. June is survived by sister Janet Pummill and her husband Doug; son Chuck Pinnell and wife Patricia Cummings; grandson Rene Pinnell, his wife Selena and great-grandson Remi; grandson Mike Pinnell and his wife Elle; daughter Peggy Pinnell; daughter Patricia Denmark and husband Ken Denmark Jr; grandson Kenny Denmark and Amy Soukup and grandson Bryant Denmark and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
To honor her life long love of music the family asks that in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Music Programs @ A&M Methodist Church. Donations can be made online at am-umc.org, go to GIVE and there will be a drop down menu where you can choose the FUND –“In Honor of June Pinnell”.
