Juana Maria Bryand de Muñoz, born on January 16, 1930, died peacefully the evening of August 23, 2024, in Bryan, Texas. She was born in El Bordo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. As a strong believer in Christ, she passed away in peace and full confidence she was stepping into the presence of her Lord and Savior.
Juana Maria was orphaned at 16 and became sole caretaker for herself and her two younger sisters. From an early age and until her passing, she dedicated her life to taking care of her family and friends, working tirelessly, often through the night. She often mentioned how important it was to her that those in her care never went to bed hungry. A woman of incredible intellect and unequaled work ethic, she became a top seamstress and number one salesperson for Sears in her region, but always with her one passion in mind, her family. At 23, she married the love of her life, Guillermo Muñoz, and together they worked hard to provide a great life for their children, making education a big priority. Juana Maria’s testimony and life embodied the commandments in Matthew 22:37-39 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
She is survived and deeply loved by eight of her children: German Muñoz (wife: Edilma) of Cali, Colombia; son Alberto Muñoz (wife: Blanca Nidia) of Cali, Colombia; Oswaldo Muñoz of Bryan, Texas; Fabiola Byrne (husband: David) of Bryan, Texas; Pedro Muñoz (wife: Maria Elena) of Twin Falls, Idaho; Inés Heinz (husband: Michael) of Livermore, California; Guillermo Muñoz (wife: Darcy) of College Station, Texas; and Gerardo Muñoz (wife: Rosa Dávila) of Twin Falls, Idaho; 28 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Aura Provancher (husband: Larry) of Grand Rapids, Michigan along with innumerable beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Guillermo Muñoz of Twin Falls, Idaho and her cherished daughters Gloria Paz de Hernandez (husband: Luis Enrique Hernandez) of Monterrey, México, and Ruth Mary García (husband: Braulio) of Hastings, Michigan. She was also preceded in death by her parents Gerrald Bryand and Herlinda Ordoñez de Bryand of El Bordo, Cauca, Colombia and sister Irma Bryand de Arias (husband: Hector) of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The family wants to thank Dr. Fleener and Dr. Floyd of the Cancer Center in Bryan, for their care and support with Juana Maria’s cancer diagnoses. Additionally, the family extends special gratitude to Dr. U. Kakwan, Dr. Brazeal, and all the doctors, nurses, care aides and volunteers of Hospice Brazos Valley who provided her with care that allowed her to live her best life. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes memorial contributions to the two charities Juana Maria supported through the end of her life: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
