John "Johnny" Lee Best

October 10, 1942 — June 29, 2023

John Lee Best, known to his loved ones as Johnny, passed away on June 29, 2023, in Somerville, Texas, at the age of 80. He was born on October 10, 1942, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Johnny moved to East Texas at age three and was raised by his late Aunt and Uncle, Frank and Violet Best. John was preceded in death by his birth parents, Mozell and John Barney Best, as well as his brothers, Don Allen Best and Samuel “Sambo” Best.

Johnny had a zest for life and a deep love for his family. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people and always made others laugh and think. He was a talented writer who enjoyed sharing his poetry and short stories with others. Recently, he celebrated the publication of his first book on June 2, 2023. Johnny was immensely proud of his “younger wife” of 58 years, Dona Sue, and cherished their children and grandchildren. His unconditional love and support were evident in the close bond they shared.

In his earlier years, Johnny served in the Texas Army National Guard from 1961 to 1966, where he earned the Marksman Award. Johnny also served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer for HBC Company and shared his love for education while working with Adaptive Behavior students at Aldine Senior High School. 

Outside of his career, Johnny had a variety of interests and hobbies. He had a passion for creativity and music. He was an avid sports fan and found joy in the beauty of nature and creation. Above all, he was dedicated to being a loving husband, father, and Papa.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home located at 3001 S College Ave, Bryan, TX 77801. John Lee Best leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a passion for life. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Dona Sue Best, their three children, Amy, John Franklin, and Penelope, and respective families: Sam & Amy Hascek – children, Cormac and Gunner; John Best & Jenny Gillis – children, Nathan, Gracyn, and Whitley; Jason & Penelope Hamilton – children, Jacob, Cody, and Andrew. He will also be greatly missed by numerous close family and friends whom he considered kinfolk. May his memory live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
