Frances Joanne Shelbourne was born in Idabel, Ok on February 11, 1932 to Arthur Lee Shelbourne Jr and Aimee Cleo Shelbourne. She died on June 24, 2024 in Tomball, Texas.
Her family lived in northeast Texas, Illinois, and Alabama. When she was in her mid-teens the family settled in Corpus Christi, TX. She started Del Mar Jr College at 16 in Corpus Christi, and then graduated from Texas State College for Women in 1952. Joanne returned to Corpus Christi to teach Home Economics to 8th & 9th grade Boys & Girls.
Joanne married Bob Berridge in 1954. For a time they were both teachers in Corpus Christi. In addition to classroom teaching, she was part of the initial program for Head Start. Bob had the opportunity to obtain his Doctorate, so the family moved to Michigan for 2 years, and Indiana for 3 years. During this time, she did substitute teaching and volunteered in the schools. She also earned her Master’s Degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Soon after, the family then moved to Aggieland! Joanne was one of the original teachers at the Big K in College Station, and taught at College Hills Elementary. While teaching she earned her Doctorate at Texas A&M University.
Joanne & Bob lived in Bryan for 18 years and then retired to Walden on Lake Conroe. She loved being involved in recipe & book groups with her friends and volunteering at the Assistance League of Montgomery County. She was awarded the Ladies Association of Walden “Women of the Year Award”. Joanne was also very active with the Friends of the Library in Montgomery. After Bob’s death, Joanne relocated to Bryan in 2018. She found good friends to stay active and busy.
Joanne was a part of the A&M Church of Christ while living in Bryan from 1970-1987. When they moved to Lake Conroe in 1987, she was active with the church in Walden and the Longmire Church of Christ in Conroe. When Joanne moved back to Bryan in 2018 she attended services at the Central Church of Christ for a time. Joanne was a member of the College Hill Church of Christ, in North Richland Hills, for her last few years. She took comfort in participating via live stream for several years until she was unable to do so. For years she supported Fosters Home for Children in Stephenville, Tx.
Joanne is survived by her children Patricia Bingham and husband Bill, David Berridge and fiancé Judy, John Berridge and wife Cindy; five grandchildren – Melissa Hill (Alan); Stephen Bingham; Sarah Preston (David), Tommy Berridge (Kayla), Caitlin Lopez (Jonathan); great-grandchildren – Rosemary Abigail, Robert Andrew, Micah, Ezra, Isaiah, Moriah, Abri, Camden, Easton, Gideon, Rose (arriving in August), Layla, and Leo.
She is also survived by her two younger brothers Arthur Lee “Lee” Shelbourne III and Patrick “Pat” Shelbourne and wife Ollie.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 2:30 pm at the Callaway Jones Funeral Home, 3001 S College Ave, Bryan, TX. Express condolences and view the service at www.CallawayJones.com. Her ashes will be inurned at a later date at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston, Texas beside her husband Dr. Robert I. “Bob” Berridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Fosters Home for Children, PO Box 978, Stephenville, Texas.
