Janie McCollum Case was born in Austin, Texas, to Gene and Rita Curington on November 1, 1946. She passed away peacefully in Bryan, Texas, on March 5, 2025.
Janie graduated as the salutatorian of her senior class from Gregory-Portland High School in 1965. On July 20, 1968, she married the love of her life, Jerry Lynn McCollum, and together they built a beautiful life. Janie dedicated her career to serving as an elementary school secretary, a role she cherished deeply. She loved every moment spent in a school, surrounded by children and educators.
Janie and Jerry raised their family in Friendswood, Texas, before moving to Hempstead in 1995 following her retirement. She was an active member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and served as the church secretary. After Jerry’s passing, Janie relocated to Georgetown, Texas in order to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Later in life, she found companionship with Bill Robbins, and together they shared a love for nature, growing tomatoes and tending to a pecan orchard in Bowie, Texas. Eventually, they settled in Hearne, Texas, where Janie enjoyed the simple joys of being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Janie had a deep love for animals, especially her beloved dogs and cats. She was an avid reader and a devoted Houston Astros fan, always cheering on her team. Her warmth and kindness extended beyond her own family, as she was always seen as a second mother to all of her children’s friends, welcoming them with open arms and a loving heart.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Rita Curington; her loving husband, Jerry McCollum; and her sister, Susan Johnson.
She is survived by her companion of over a decade, Bill Robbins; her children, Patti and Tommy Morton of Buda, TX; Rick and Elizabeth McCollum of Kyle, TX; Michael McCollum of Houston, TX; and Becca and Brandy McCollum of Waxahachie, TX. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Dr. Nathan and Brittny Burow, Ashley and CJ Stewart, Whitley Loftin, Mason McCollum, Madison and Stephen Broyles, Hunter McCollum, Becca Ramirez, and Alyssa Ramirez, as well as her great-grandchildren, Riley and Lyla Stewart and Emily Burow.
Additionally, she is survived by her beloved siblings: Bill (Jackie) Curington, Phil Johnson (widow of her sister Susan), Ann Reuter, Eve McBee, and Mary (Tom) Humphrey.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 13, at 2:00 PM at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Hempstead, TX, with graveside services to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hempstead.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Janie’s memory to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, or the HOPE Rescue Center Animal Shelter in Hearne, TX.
Janie’s kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for her family, friends, and community will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
