James "Jim" Johnson

March 2, 1949 — July 23, 2024

James (Jim) Leslie Johnson, 75, of College Station, Texas passed away on July 23, 2024.  A graveside ceremony is planned at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 20 at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christ.  A Celebration of Life will follow at Corpus Christi Yacht Club.

Jim was born in Refugio, Texas to Price and Della Johnson.  He attended Refugio High School then joined the Army, proudly serving in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968.  Afterwards, he attended San Jacinto College and Texas A&M before returning home to Refugio.  There he met the love of his life, Cynthia (Cindy) Salch, and they were married on May 30, 1985.

Jim and Cindy worked side-by-side the next several years, operating a contracting business in Refugio and then an environmental testing business that began in Austin and later moved to New Jersey. While in New Jersey the two fell in love with sailing and purchased Esconditas, a Bristol 43.3’.  After the business was sold, they sailed the boat to Corpus Christi and worked various jobs until retirement.  Then they spent 15 years cruising together on Esconditas from Corpus through the Bahamas and back up to Maine.  When they sold the boat, they took up RVing and traveled the United States for a few years before they finally settled in College Station in 2011.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, step mothers and step sister.  He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and a half sister and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins – too many to list.
