James Howell

November 8, 1946 — May 4, 2023

Services for Jim will be held at Callaway Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, TX on 5/16/2023, at ten in the morning. Internment will be later that day, at three in the afternoon, at Central Texas State Veteran’s Cemetery, in Killeen, TX.

Jim was born in Tell City, Indiana in 1946, to parents Pauline Borton and Curtis Howell. Due to the early loss of Curtis in an accident, Jim was raised by Sylvester Berger and his mother Pauline. They provided him with a loving home and a strong foundation. He enlisted in the army at a young age, and served in Korea during the Vietnam War. After the army, Jim decided to pursue a career involving his love of automobiles. He had a long and exciting career in automotive engineering that took him to many wonderful places in this country and the world.

Jim grew up in a loving family, with four brothers, Leslie, Leo, Mark, and Chris, and his sister Susie. His love of family led him to become a wonderful father to Jill, Jana, Sarah, and Andrew. He later met his wife, Catherine Howell, and added two more children, Charlotte and Tim. In Jim’s younger days you could find him near the beach. He’s always had a love of the water. As he got older, he developed a love of horses and other pets. He and his wife, Cathy, opened a wolfdog rescue and worked hard to help animals in need. Jim loved music, and loved to play the guitar. He loved sharing music with Cathy, his children and his grandchildren. Jim has thirteen grandchildren. He loved his family with his whole heart. His family will miss his humor, his willingness to be present and available for all things at all times, and his amazing heart.

Jim was preceded in death by fathers Curtis Howell and Sylvester Berger, and his sister Susie Krause.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Howell, and his children, Jill and Husband Joe, Jana and husband Matt, Sarah and husband Justin, Andrew, Charlotte, and Tim.

In lieu of flowers, Jim and his family request donations to be made to The ALS Association.
