James (Jim) Rodgers was born in Calvert, TX on July 6, 1927, and peacefully went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 30, 2025, at age 97, with his family by his side.
In 1942 and only 15 years old, Jim fudged a little on his age in order to fight for our freedom with the Merchant Marines in World War II. Once he returned to Bryan, he went to work for the Brazos Tire Company until drafted by the United States Army to fight in the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in September of 1952, he went to work for Sears Roebuck & Company where he met and married the love of his life Christine, a young widow with 2 small children Regina and Robert. Jim was a 36-year-old bachelor but dived in head over heels as a husband and dad; and 10 months later they were blessed with their daughter Janelle. He spent the next 61 years dedicated to his love for Christ and his family. Jim retired after 35 years with Sears and because of his great love of animals worked at the Kurten Vet Clinic for another 5 years in “semi-retirement”. Semi-retirement also turned into caring for his cattle and his neighbors, as well as growing a garden that would rival the best of the best. He shared the bounty of his garden with everyone he loved.
Jim served as a deacon and member of Northview Baptist Church in Bryan for 50 years.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Lora Rodgers; daughter Regina McDaniel; sisters Reva (Gene) Rochester, Merner (Dale) King, Martha (R.A.) Park, Lucy (Norman) Cothren and a brother Elmer Perl Rodgers.
Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Chris Rodgers; son Robert (Kim) McDaniel of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter Janelle Carver of Bryan, TX; grandchildren Amanda Miskell, Cameron Carver and Carli Carver of Bryan, Dakota (Brooke) McDaniel of Houston, TX, Austin (Kirsten) McDaniel and Shelby (Dalton) Ertz of Alaska; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Services for Jim will be on Wednesday, February 5th, at Northview Baptist Church, 1809 Tabor Rd., Bryan. Visitation will begin at 10 AM, with the funeral following at 11 AM. The church and family will host a potluck/lunch following the service in the church fellowship hall. Procession to the burial at Reliance Baptist Church Cemetery, 6925 Reliance Church Rd., Bryan, will leave Northview Baptist at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Traditions Hospice at 1103 Rock Prairie Rd., Suite 2051B, College Station, TX 77845; or Northview Baptist Church, 1809 Tabor Rd, Bryan, TX 77803. Express condolences with the family at www.CallawayJones.com.
