Steve was born in Texarkana, Ark to Dorothy Hawthorne and Jack Buckley. He died, fittingly at 4:20, after a cancer diagnosis almost a year ago.
He was a gentle and patient man, having an interest in all people and places. He had a great curiosity about what was out there in the great world and loved to tell about people he met and places he had been. When he made a friend, it was a friend for life.
As a child he lived in Texarkana, Silver City, NM, and Seminole, TX, where he graduated high school.
After graduation, he continued his wanderlust by moving to Big Bear, CA, then to Kansas City, KA, where he went to a technical school for computer programming., then on to Baltimore, MD.
He ended up in the Houston area, where he went to work for Humble Oil, and he continued working at Exxon Pipeline until his retirement in the early 90’s. They moved him to Bryan-College Station in 1981. He was the Field Gauger for the BCS, Hearne, Franklin, Navasota area for many years. After his retirement from Exxon, he went to work for HTRI, as a research technician, and worked there for more than 15 years.
Steve took great joy in playing the guitar and singing. He would meet with friends for a weekly jam session, which was “Music School” or “Music’s Cool”. He played golf with the “Fearsome Foursome” weekly. He snow-skied as often as possible, and enjoyed trips to the mountains with friends. Other good times were had just “Porch Sitting” and swapping stories with a good glass of wine, horseback riding, going to the races in Saratoga Springs, and scuba diving. He also enjoyed spending time at the country place.
Steve was preceded in death by both of his parents, and his brother, Tommy.
His survivors include his wife, Liz; “Dad” Wayne (Carol); his children Jeremy (Lauren) of Brenham, Kristen (Mark) of Lubbock, and Danya (Carlos) of Andrews; his brothers, Rodney (Mary), Keith, and Mike (Sherri), his sister, Brynda, and sister-in-law Gail. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hunter, Sarah, Caleb, Anah, Hadley, Kaden, Emmie, Jackson, and Lukas.
He was a proud father and grandfather.
Memorials can be made to the Brazos Valley Food Bank, Hospice Brazos Valley, or to a charity of your choice.
There will be no formal service, but we will have a “Celebration of Life” party at the country place on Saturday, November 11, 2023, 3:00pm.
