Gregory Wayne Herwald went peacefully home to Heaven on the night of October 26, 2023. Concluding his long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, Greg traded his broken earthly body for a perfect eternal one at home with the Lord.
Greg was born on September 17, 1956 to Arthur and Dorothy Herwald in Bryan, TX, where he lived his entire life. He earned his BBA in Management from Texas A&M University in 1979 and the following year married the love of his life, Kathy Ann Lindemann, on June 14, 1980. Together they had three sons: Brian, Aaron and Jeffrey.
As a man of God committed to family, Greg put his degree to work by managing family businesses on both the Herwald and Lindemann sides of the family. He had also been manager of business operations at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan. However, it was his faith and family, not his profession, that defined who he was.
Greg was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant and remained a faithful servant of God in every part of his life. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Navasota, and a former member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan. He loved to hear, learn and teach the message of Christ. Using his God given talents, he joyfully served on most of the various boards of the church.
Greg’s musical passion which began as a young child blossomed through participation in school bands and came to full beauty when he would sing and play trumpet in worship services. Singing, playing trumpet and piano each brought him much joy, particularly when they were channeled through Christian hymns. Those lucky enough to see him on a dance floor with Kathy knew how much he loved to dance with her to just about any tune as well.
Greg loved being in the outdoors. From a young age he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. As the family grew, he shared his love for these activities with his sons. The family savored spending family time together camping at Texas State Parks, hunting on leases in the Texas Hill Country, and fishing in family ponds locally or at Lakeview in Palestine, TX. His land – and particularly his cattle – were always a place for him to escape and relax when he wasn’t busy elsewhere.
Greg lived with confident content and was a devoted son, husband, father, brother and friend. His consistently calm and kind nature touched the lives of all he knew.
Greg is loved, missed and survived by his wife, Kathy; sons: Brian and wife Gabi, Aaron and wife Christina, and Jeffrey. Parents, Arthur and Dorothy Herwald; mother-in-law, Martha Evelyn Lindemann; Grandchildren: Charlotte, Arthur (Archie), and Emily. Sisters: Lisa (Kenneth) Loke and Susan (Tim) Gade; Sisters-in-law: Linda (Wayne) Wheatly and Jan Walker; nieces and nephews along with numerous cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 31st from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Callaway-Jones Funeral & Cremation Center in Bryan.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 1st at 10 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Navasota.
