Gene Verwold who was known for his quiet, easy going, and caring disposition, went to spend Christmas with his long- time sweetheart, Evelyn, in Heaven on Tuesday, December, 13, 2022.
Gene was born in Cook’s Point, TX on May 4, 1937, to Ernest and Mary Verwold and grew up on his family’s farm with his three brothers, sister, and father. He attended Caldwell High School where he met his life-long love, Evelyn Vykukal. There, they began their long love story with Gene on the football field fighting for the Hornets and Evelyn on the sidelines as Head Cheerleader cheering him on. After games, he fondly remembered her running out onto the field to greet him.
After graduation, he left to Houston and attended Barber School. Gene and Evelyn were married on April 19, 1958, and lived in Houston. After his military service, the couple moved to College Station, TX where he worked at Don’s Barber Shop. In 1968, he opened the Razor’s Edge Barber Shop with his hometown friend Herb Fedora. Always smiling and ready for a good laugh, Gene made many meaningful relationships with customers as well as his fellow employees: Mike Orosco, Hubert Krenek, and Tom Krenek. After 49 years in the same location, Gene closed the shop and retired.
Gene’s top priority was raising his family and gardening and ranching on their family farm in Caldwell. He was a founding member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station and volunteered in many capacities including ushering, landscaping, cooking for the church festival and fellowship.
Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim and Robert, sister Mildred, and his wife Evelyn. Gene is survived by his children Gerald and his wife Jill, and Carla and her husband Curtis Youngblood; grandchildren Aaron Verwold, Amber Verwold, Amber Mills, Tyler Mills, Lauren Youngblood, Abby Youngblood, and Aarick Verwold.
