Elizabeth Yancy Chenoweth

December 16, 1926 — December 21, 2024

Bryan, Texas

Elizabeth Yancy Chenoweth passed away on December 21, 2024 at the age of 98.

Elizabeth was born in San Angelo, Texas on December 16, 1926. She graduated from TSCW (now Texas Woman’s University) in 1947 and married Robert Dean Chenoweth (Bob), her high school sweetheart, in July of that year. They made their first home in College Station, but later moved to Atlanta, GA, Cleveland, OH, and Rolla, MO before returning to College Station in 1967 as Bob pursued his career as a professor of Electrical Engineering. In 2013, they moved to the Crestview retirement community in Bryan, TX.

Throughout her life Elizabeth was an active member of the United Methodist Church, particularly the United Methodist Women, various Sunday school classes, and the Maroon and White Corps (a group dedicated to helping students adjust to their new lives as Aggies). She was also active in the Newcomer’s group at A&M when she first returned to College Station, and P.E.O., chapter EQ (an organization which promotes education for women worldwide). She loved entertaining and cooking, whether in the church kitchen where she helped prepare many meals for various church functions, or at home for family and friends. She and Bob often invited students over for holiday meals and Sunday dinners; and she was well known for sharing her extensive recipe collection. Elizabeth enjoyed watching birds, raising houseplants, playing bridge and traveling.

Elizabeth is survived by her four children & their families: her son John Stephen Chenoweth and his wife Lillian Chenoweth of Denton, TX and their children Ben and Ellen Chenoweth; her son Todd Chenoweth and his wife Jan Chenoweth of Bryan, TX and daughter Dr. Julia Gold and her husband Philip Gold; her son Roger Chenoweth and his wife Julie Chenoweth of Raleigh, NC and their six daughters and dozen grandchildren, Hilerie and Dave Gellenbeck, Dr. Mercedes and Dr. Matthew Pizzuto, Jennifer Chenoweth; Alexandria and Ian Ray-McMillian, April Ray (deceased), Haley and Matthew May; and her daughter Ann Chenoweth and partner Douglas Hale, of Garberville, CA. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Robert Dean Chenoweth, her parents, John Burns Yancy and Emma Mae Williams Yancy of Villa Rica, GA, and her sister Betty Ann Yancy Payne, husband Edsel Payne and daughter Claudette Payne Griffin all of Hixon, TN.

Funeral services will be held at A&M United Methodist Church, 417 University Drive, College Station, TX at 10AM on January 9. A live-stream of the service can be found on the A&M United Methodist Church YouTube channel.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the loving care that the staff of Crestview Memory Unit and Hospice Brazos Valley provided to Elizabeth for so many years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to A&M United Methodist Church, A&M Wesley Foundation, The P.E.O. Educational Fund, or the charity of your choice.
