Dr. Dollie Joyce Jackson died peacefully in her sleep at her home on November 18, 2024. She was born on January 6, 1932, in Orangeburg, SC to Hammie Murray and Dollie Robinson Jackson.
Joyce was the third of four children and grew up loving sports, music, and dance. She developed a love of education while attending Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. After graduating in 1953 with a BS in Physical Education, Joyce went on to obtain her MS and PhD in Education at the University of Tennessee. She taught in Lakewood, OH; Houston, TX; Nuremburg, Germany: Los Angeles, CA; and finished her last 25 years of teaching in the Education and Psychology Department at Berry College in Rome, GA. She was a member of AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi. When not teaching, Joyce loved tennis, golf, gardening, traveling and bridge. She also enjoyed showering her four nieces and three nephews with all sorts of special adventures.
Joyce’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Grace House in Bryan, TX. Dee and her amazing staff helped Joyce live out her last several years surrounded by their incredible love and compassion for their residents. Dr. Jackson was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Margie (& David) Laughery; her brother, James (& Sue) Jackson; her sister, Betty (& Jack) McCuistion and her nephew Jay Downey. She is survived by nieces, Tricia (& Ron) Roberson of Conroe, TX; Sharon (& Keith) Spoonmore of Ingram, TX; Jan (& Michael) Stolze of Tijeras NM and Linda Downey of Georgetown, TX. Surviving nephews are James (Jay) (& Cynthia) Jackson of Columbia, SC, Dwight Jackson of Columbia, SC and David Jackson of Washington, DC. Joyce is also survived by many great and great-great nieces and nephews in TX, IL and SC.
