Doris Marie Hunter-Gear, 82 of College Station passed away at her home on June 10, 2023.
On November 13, 1940, Doris was born to parents Woody Elmer Ball and Lucy Mae Ball. Doris graduated from Elgin High School in 1958, where she played clarinet in the band, worked at the Elgin Courier, and was selected to represent central Texas at Girls State. She was also awarded the Betty Crocker Homemaker of the year award her senior year.
Doris attended the University of Texas at Austin after her graduation from Elgin High, where she majored in Medical Technology and was often the only woman in chemistry and mathematics courses. After receiving her Bachelor of Science at U.T., Doris went on to earn her Masters degree in Microbiology at Texas A&M University where she then pursued a PhD in Veterinary Genetics.
Doris was a part of groundbreaking research at Texas A&M in veterinary cloning, and is a named scientist on several patents, including the first cloned calf, “Bull 86 Squared” and first cloned pet, a feline named “C.C.“ (“Copy Cat.”) Doris was also proud to be a central part of research into cures for diseases in cattle, such as brucellosis and foot-and-mouth disease.
While science was her greatest passion, Doris valued her faith in God and her love for her family above all. She enjoyed studying bible translations and loved music and theater, especially The Phantom of the Opera. Her favorite moments were traveling with her husband Bart and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her husband Barton Gear of College Station, son Andrew Hunter and wife Elizabeth Hunter of College Station, daughter Pamela Oxendine and husband Scott Oxendine of Coppell, daughter Ginger Shuffer and husband Steve Shuffer of Pflugerville, and grandkids Chloe Oxendine, Claire Oxendine, Ember Hunter, Orion Hunter, Mason Hunter, and Arden Shuffer. Doris is preceded in death by son Jonathon Brady Hunter, son Fredrick Arlo Hunter, and first husband Audie “Arlo” Hunter.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan, Texas. Interment will be taking place Monday, June 19, 2023 at Live Oak Cemetery in Austin, Texas.
