Donald Allen Roberts

August 30, 1947 — May 2, 2023

Donald Allen Roberts, 75, of Bryan, Texas, joined his Heavenly Father on May 2, 2023. He was born August 30, 1947, to Ed and Pam Roberts in McColl, South Carolina.

Don spent his childhood in North Carolina, playing tricks on family with his siblings, Wilson, Tom, and Joan. During high school, he worked as a butcher at the local Pate’s grocery store. He had natural athleticism, played many sports, and was known for hitting home runs out of the Laurel Hill baseball park. After graduating from high school, he married his first wife, Barbara Leviner. Shortly after, he joined the Army and was stationed in Fort Sill, OK. After his service, he took a job in Clinton, IL, where their daughter, Stormy, was born.
Don met and married Sharron Stout in 1975 in Corpus Christi, TX. They were happily married for 47 years. Together they raised three children, Stormy, Shane, and Kelly. They moved to Nebraska and Alabama, before moving to Franklin, TX. It was while in Franklin that they met their lifelong friends, Billy & Linda Skorupinski. They moved to Bryan in 1987 and have resided in the same house for 35 years. Don and Sharron loved fishing with their children along the Texas Coast or in the pond, managed by his good friend, Gary Cobb. They would often travel to see family in North Carolina, play cards & pool, and kick up their heel’s country western dancing. He would meet up yearly with his friends, Jim Kells, Roger McCrory, and Jess McCrory to play golf at different courses around the state. He enjoyed estate sales, storage unit auctions, and had antique booths, including having one in Shane’s store. He spent time looking for arrowheads in numerous places, especially in the Brazos River Bottom. He planted okra, squash, and tomatoes every year. He loved to cook for his family and was known for his gumbo, roast, and fried fish. He enjoyed playing board games with his grandchildren. Don worked for Wilbur Ellis and made lifelong friendships with his co-workers and customers. He retired in 2010, after working there for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Sharron; his children, Stormy Henning (Hank), Shane Thornburg (Kathleen), and Kelly Weller (John). Don had 10 grandchildren: Claire Chabot, Zachary Thornburg, Bethany Thornburg, Michaela (Nicholas) Elmore, Kenzie Newton, Lillie Weller, Henry Henning, Eli Henning, Tristan Newton, and a great-grandchild, Kinley Elmore, who will be born later this summer. He is survived by his sister, Joan Mohr, his sister-in-law, Christine Roberts, his brother-in-law, Jimmy (Clarisa) Stout, and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends. He is also survived by his 8-year-old Poodle-Chihuahua, Cricket.

He is preceded in death by parents, his brothers, Wilson and Tom, his brother-in-law, Victor Mohr, his sister-in-law, Demetra Roberts, and his 5-day old son, Clinton Allen Roberts; and his mother-and-father-in-law, Shirley & James Stout.
