Long-time College Station resident Don Weldon Wood, 83, passed away Sunday December 1, 2024 in College Station, TX. Don was the eldest child of Weldon Monroe Wood and Freddie Odessa Sledge (Wood), who met in high school in their hometown of Olney, Texas, where Don was born. Following his father’s service in Europe during WWII, the family relocated to Dallas, settling in the Oak Cliff area, where they lived for many years. In his teens, Don achieved Eagle Scout status and graduated from Sunset High School in 1959. He enrolled at The University of Texas at Arlington, where he met, married and graduated with Katherine J. Coleman in 1965. The couple had two children, Donald and Meredith. Subsequently, Don completed basic training and Officer Candidate School and was awarded the rank of Lieutenant and posted in Hanau, Germany. Following Don’s honorable discharge, the couple settled in Dallas, and Don went to work for the Kroger Corporation. From there, Don accepted an employment offer from Texas A&M University, which brought the family to College Station. Don worked in the Office of Planning and Institutional Analysis at TAMU from 1972 until his retirement in 2011, and completed an MBA at TAMU soon after his employment. He married his wife, Janeen, in 1997. Don was a devoted husband, and a dedicated and loving father to Donald and Meredith, and a kind and supportive stepparent to Janeen’s children, Dillen Ashton and Meagan McKellar. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker, gardener, cook, reader and lifelong learner and generously shared his knowledge and talents with friends and family. Don will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Janeen, of College Station, his son Donald Wood and wife, Akiko Takahashi-Wood, and his granddaughters Seiko Takahashi-Wood and Motoko Takahashi-Wood, of Akita, Japan, his daughter Meredith Wood, of Austin, his brother Richard (“Dick”) Wood, and his wife Cindy, of Plano, and his brother Dan Wood and his wife, Toni, of Huntington Beach, California.
