Bobby Andrew Charlton

Staff Sergeant Bobby Andrew Charlton, “Bob”, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Bryan, Texas.  Visitation will be at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan, Texas, on Friday, April 29^th at 10 am with a memorial service to start at 11 am.  Burial will follow at Norwood Cemetery in Hearne with military honors.

Bob was born March 7, 1929, in Madisonville, Texas.  After high school, Bob served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1946-1947 and the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1966.  He served as a Radar Operator and with the Aircraft Control and Warning System in Germany and Iceland.  Bob was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, European Occupation Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.  After his military service, Bob worked in the Federal Prison System in Wisconsin, and was appointed Deputy Sheriff in Minnesota where he assisted in the transport of prisoners.

Bob later returned to Texas to be near family and began working for the local MHMR and was a Workshop Supervisor in Hearne, Texas.  This is where he would meet the love of his life, Telva Parker.  The two were married February 11, 1984, in Gause, Texas.  After several years working together at MHMR, the two retired and traveled the country in their RV to some of their favorite areas meeting up with fellow Air Force buddies at reunions.  Later in retirement years, Bob went to work as a shuttle van driver for local Union Pacific train crews for 16 years.  The train crews nicknamed him “Bullet Bob” because of his speedy take-off.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jim and Emily Charlton, sister Margaret Brashear, brothers James Charlton, Travis Charlton, and Jerry Charlton.

Bob is survived by his wife of 38 years, Telva Charlton; sisters Leta Rogers and Gina Stevener and brother Danal Charlton; nieces Cheryl Simmons and husband Mark, and Rene Rogers and husband Mark Wham; nephew Curtis Rogers; sister-in-law Sidney Charlton; step-children Rilene McCord and husband Dale, Mary Jo Scambray and husband James, Rodney King and wife Laura, and Patsy Wiley and husband Keith; step-grandchildren Lori Mervish and husband David, Heather Ely, Jason Ely and wife Jessica, Jamie Scambray, Amanda Gross and husband Josh, Jamie South and husband Eric, Andy King and wife Jennifer, Ashley Machicek and husband Lucas, and Cody Wiley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-great grandchildren.

Bob and Telva were long time members of Southern Oaks Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas, where they became close friends with Pastor Ramiro Castillo and his wife, Sandy.

During his life, Bob had a great love of country music and dancing.  He would spend many hours playing cards, dominoes, and Jokers & Pegs with Telva and their friends. He had a true tender heart for animals and was always helping those less fortunate or in need.  Bob loved his children and their families like they were his own.  The times spent together with him, hearing his jokes, and making sure he had his glass of milk at any family event will be cherished by all who loved him.  “Holy Smokes!!”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob’s honor to the American Legion Post 159 or the ASPCA.  The family would also like to thank the following for their care and support:  Guardian Home Health and Cat Fehr; Essie Foster with Affordable Home Care; Traditions Hospice, and Carriage Inn.
