Betty Mcgary

Betty Mae (Baxter) McGary, 75, of Bryan, Texas passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022.  She was born on July 2, 1946, in Troup, Texas, to the late Floyd and Ida Baxter.

While growing up, Betty spent many summers visiting family in the Rio Grande Valley area.  This is where, at the age of 6, while playing jacks in front of the screen door, she first encountered this skinny boy, with one pants leg rolled up it so it wouldn’t get caught in his bicycle chain, that kept running in and out the door, messing up her game.  That skinny boy, Tommy Ray McGary, become her husband on March 2, 1962.  Prior to Tommy’s passing on October 6, 2021, they spent 59-1/2 wonderful years together, enjoying all that life and love had to offer.

Betty retired after a 30-year career with GTE/Verizon.  After retirement, Betty & Tommy traveled extensively throughout the United States.

In addition to her husband Tommy, Betty is preceded in death by her parents: Floyd and Ida Baxter; in-laws: Ollie and Maggie McGary; siblings: Sarah (Bill) Lofton, Emmitt (Margaret) Baxter, Leonard (Alice) Baxter, and Linnie Jean Ready; brother-in-law:  William (Meredith) McGary; sister-in-law:  Marcella (Leroy) Haught; and special niece:  Betty Jean Dunkin.

Betty is survived by her children: Tammy (Vernon) Oehlke, Curtis McGary and Kenneth McGary.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Brooke Oehlke (fiancé Cort Pennington), Justin (Amber) Oehlke, Cole McGary, Cheyenne McGary, and Hunter McGary; great-grandchildren: Carlie, Kash, Weston and Colton.  Betty is also survived by brother-in-law Olen (Joan) McGary and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty is a member of First Baptist Bryan and former member of Glenn Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas.

Betty’s family would like to recognize and thank her closest, dearest friend, Pat Chreene.  Without Pat making her weekly trips from Flower Mound to La Grange to help care for Mom, we would not have been able to have her at home with us during the final days of her illness.  We would also like to recognize everyone at Hospice Brazos Valley, particularly Sara Weishuhn, RN, for the care provided our mother, and the guidance and support provided to our family.
