Barbara Ann Lanehart Johnson

October 30, 1946 — February 20, 2023

Born October 30, 1946, in Bryan, Texas, Barbara Johnson, a loving wife, mom, mawmaw, sister, and friend passed away on February 20, 2023. Barbara is preceded in death by her father, Fred P. Lanehart; mother, Mavis M. Lanehart; and brother, Edward C. Lanehart. Surviving family members are her husband, David W. Johnson; son, David C. Johnson and his wife, Julea of Bryan; daughter, Rebecca A. Homeyer and her husband, Steven of Sanger, Texas; and her adoring grandchildren; Ashley Homeyer of Dallas, Brennen Johnson of Bryan, Lauren Homeyer of Washington D.C, Baylea Schwalen and husband Thomas of Bryan, and Braeden Johnson of Bryan.

Barbara graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1965 and married David W. Johnson in December of the same year at Calvary Baptist Church in Bryan. Barbara and Dave lived in Georgia and Germany during their marriage due to his military service but soon returned to Bryan to raise their two children, David “Clay” and Rebecca. Barbara worked as a switchboard operator for GTE, a service technician for Montgomery Ward, a proof clerk for First Bank and Trust, and retired as a Chief Deputy Clerk for the County Clerk’s office of Brazos County in June 2002. In her retirement, between doting on and loving her grandchildren, Barbara also worked part-time as a receptionist for the Bryan ISD’s technology department.

Barbara was full of love and fun throughout her entire life and enjoyed cooking, traveling, gardening, raising chickens, and popping fireworks. Barbara is world renowned for her smothered steaks and mashed potatoes that would cure any hunger needs. She had an abundance of love for everyone she ever met and never met someone she did not have time to worry about. Barbara was as strong as she was kind and loving as she fought cancer for 22 years before eventually, her health gave way. It never mattered how much pain she endured or how sick she was from treatments, she always took time to check in with all her many friends and family to find out just how they were doing. Barbara was a testament to faithful servitude and love for one another and she showed this through her actions every day of her life.

Barbara loved her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends. Her sisters Clara Hubacek and Mary Lanehart enjoyed trips and getaways that often found much-needed beach time. She loved to watch and describe the antics of her brothers Tommy Lanehart and Edward Lanehart who could always be counted on for a laugh, smile, and hopefully a prank that had everyone in stitches. Her brother-in-law John Hubacek could always be counted on to help with something that needed mechanical attention and her sister-in-law Ginger Lanehart could be counted on to keep the group in line with poise and grace. Barbara loved her nieces and nephews; Tommy Lanehart II, Jason Hubacek, April Lanehart Garrett, and Sara Hubacek Scott as she loved her own children. She will be missed by all extended family of cousins and relatives who she cared deeply for.

The family is forever thankful for the care and compassion she received at St. Joseph Cancer Treatment Center and requests that in lieu of flowers, any donations be provided for their further treatment and research. A visitation will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center, Bryan. A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Bryan City Cemetery, Bryan, TX. Express condolences at www.callawayjones.com.
