August was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 17, 1938 to parents Edward and Lucy (Gehrels) Meitzen. At age 18 he went to work for his uncle at Great Western Finance and stayed in that line of business for the next 30 years. He also joined the Airforce Reserves when he was eighteen and served as a radio operator for the next 12 years. He received his ham radio operator’s license at the same time and it was a favorite past time for him the rest of his life. His call sign was W5GLN. In 1987 he received his 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
He met the love of his life, Linda (Lewin) in 1986 at a meeting of Parents Without Partners. They were married a month after their first date and lived in Dripping Springs until their move to Brenham in 1999 where August had grand plans to produce his own wine. He began planting his vineyard in 2000 and they opened Windy Winery in 2005 where he continued to hone his skills as a master vintner. He was also passionate about astronomy, flying drones, ham radios, Tae Kwon Do and sailing.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 2008 at the age of 70 and was baptized in the Little Rocky Creek where Sam Houston was baptized.
August chose to have his remains donated to Texas A&M Health Science Center for study providing first-hand experience benefit to future physicians.
August is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter April Cox; stepsons Jason (Zoe) and Gabriel Lewin; brothers Robert (Frances) and Henry David Meitzen; grandchildren Collin, Grace, Kai and Zane Lewin; nephew Dale Meitzen and other cousins, nieces and nephews; children and grandchildren of the heart Lee, Ester, Savannah and Kylie Chalmers.
