Zoe Belle Calaway

Zoe Belle Calaway, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and lover of all creatures great and small, passed from this life on May 4th, 2021 in Bryan, TX at the age of 85. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until service time, Sunday May 23, 2021 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Services will begin at 2:00 pm. The Family is requesting everyone that is in attendance of the service to please wear a face mask.

Zoe was born March 4th, 1936 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. When she was eight years old, she and her family moved to Texas. Zoe loved to tell stories of growing up in the Oleander Homes in Galveston where she met many lifelong friends. Zoe and her best friend, Delores, loved to explore Galveston Island. Their favorite thing to do was to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they worked hard to find them forever homes. Zoe graduated from Dominican High School in 1954.

On December 27, 1963, Zoe married the love of her life, Lloyd “Cal” Calaway. Zoe and Cal lived on Teichman Road in Galveston for many years where they were fortunate to live next door to family members and friends. It was a perfect place for them to live. Cal loved to fish and Zoe loved being surrounded by loved ones. They were a very close-knit family who truly enjoyed spending time together. Zoe and Cal moved to LaMarque in 1968 where they continued to live close to family. Upon Cal’s retirement, they moved to Camp Creek Lake in 1990. Again, this was a perfect place for them to live. Cal was able to fish every day, and Zoe loved gardening, feeding the wildlife, and hosting people at the lake. Every Easter for the last 41 years, they opened their home to extended family and friends to host an annual fishing tournament and family reunion at the lake.

Over the years, Zoe worked a variety of jobs. In her early years, she worked at the admissions office at UTMB. After moving to Camp Creek, she worked in the cashier’s office at the College Station Medical Center. She took pride in her work, enjoyed meeting people, and made many friends. However, her most important work was done in the home. Zoe was passionate about her family and very devoted to her husband and four children. As a beloved mother, she taught them many things, most of all, the importance of strong family values. Throughout the years, Zoe told countless stories and taught many lessons over a pot of coffee. We will all miss having coffee with Zoe.

Zoe Belle Calaway is preceded in death by her husband, Cal Calaway, parents: Deloris “Del” and Don Grove, and her siblings: Don Jr. (Jackie) Grove, Zoanne “Mick” (Charles) Dundee, Joseph (Martha) Grove, Robert (Mary Ellen) Grove, John “Jackie” Grove, and George “Jiggs” Grove. She is survived by her four children, Terry Noack and her husband Mike of Bryan, Sidney Cranston of Lexington, Leslie Mordente of Galveston, and Lloyd “Rocky” Calaway Jr. of Bryan; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Lacy) Cranston, Misti (Daniel) Steer, Kathryn Noack, D.J. Mordente, Anthony Mordente, and Alissa Mordente; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jazmine, Jaylee, Jesse, Macie, Beckett, and Charlotte, and a wealth of extended family and friends who were very dear to her.

Zoe’s family would like to thank the special people at Hospice Brazos Valley for helping ensure her final days were spent comfortably in her home surrounded by family, friends, and most importantly, her sweet dog, Bea Bea.
