Tobias Fiedler

tobias fiedler

November 27, 1980 ~ October 28, 2020

Born in: Erlangen, Germany
Resided in: College Station, Texas

Tobias Fiedler, 39, passed unexpectedly and tragically when struck by a pickup truck driver, while doing what he enjoyed, riding a bicycle after a long day at work.

Tobias is survived by his loving parents, Petra and Wilhelm Fiedler, brothers Markus, Christian, and Sebastian with sister-in-law Elizabeth and niece Aemilia, grandaunt Brigitte, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of Germany, and his loving partner Zuzana Baranova.

A native of Forchheim, Germany, Tobias came to College Station, Texas in 2010 to complete a portion of his graduate work in chemistry at Texas A&M University, which culminated with a degree Dr. rer. nat. (PhD) from Friedrich-Alexander Universität in Erlangen-Nürnberg. While at Texas A&M University, Tobias met his future partner and came back to Texas after the completion of his studies; he remained by her side ever since. Tobias took on various roles in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M University since 2011 as a postdoctoral researcher, acting laboratory manager, and recently as a Laboratory Coordinator in the First Year Chemistry Program.

Tobias was known by his colleagues and others in the community as a humble, kind, and dedicated man with a gentle, intelligent sense of humor. Coworkers in the research group respected him as a trustworthy mentor and a natural, yet humble, leader. His artistic skills and intellect were sought after by many as he created elegant scientific graphical artworks published on cover pages of prestigious scientific journals. His precision and finesse were also infused into the desserts he would bake and generously share.

He was equally respected and befriended by many in the Texas cycling community and beyond on his adventures, often reaching 100 miles or more on days off. He preferred a hilly scenery to a flat one and the joy of riding over competition. On group rides, others counted on his strength to push through the headwinds and then he would still go back to pull the weakest riders back to safety.

Ride far, ride high, ride free, dear Tobias!

A funeral will take place in Germany; additional memorial services are TBA due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Center of Bryan College Station.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. The memories of Tobias’ quick smile, quiet friendship, and his strong protective streak are what I will treasure the most.

  2. I worked as a TA in the first year chemistry program. Dr. Fiedler was always there to help students and TAs. I feel so lucky that I got to know him.

  3. I am so saddened to hear of this tragic loss of Tobias. I rode many miles with him during my time in College Station, and always appreciated his quiet and welcoming demeanor, and impressive strength on the bike.

  4. We met Tobias on the 2014 Tour du Rouge cycling event, he was a very interesting and friendly guy, a good cyclist and lots of fun to be around. Our team, The Manhattan Project (Michael Geist, Don Claussen, Tim Verschage, Denis Smythe, and me (Andy Lincoln) invited Tobias to join us on our most-nightly post cycling Manhattan cocktail, culminating in Sazeracs at the Roosevelt Hotel bar in New Orleans. We really enjoyed cycling with Tobias and are very sorry that his life was cut short. I have only one picture including Tobias from the tour (and one he took of me) and I’d be happy to share those with the family.

  5. Tobias was a wonderful person with a bright future. I remember him as a kind, thoughtful, member of our department who always seemed to biking outside work with his partner Zuzana. He will be missed.

  6. I was so shocked to hear the sad news. Tobias was gem of a person. I will always remember his witty remarks, kind heart, and an extremely helpful personality. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

  7. I was greatly saddened when I heard the news about Tobias’ tragic death, not too long ago… He was a good man who I liked and respected very much.
