Murphy Hawkins, Sr., 97, of Bryan, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2020, in Bryan.

Murphy had a long life, and was married to the love of his life, Thelma Elyise Hawkins, for 70 years before she passed last year. He was a Christian with a strong work ethic and a deep regard for family.  Immediate family surviving Murphy are his two sons (Murphy and John), two daughter-in-laws, (Donna and Jonnie), and 4 grandchildren (Murphy III, Catherine, Alex, and Garrett). Extended family included great-grandchildren, cousins, brother in law Max, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Murphy retired from the U.S. Department of the Interior where he worked for over 30 years and at one time was appointed the Director of Oil and Gas for the State of Texas. He was a scratch golfer for most of his life, winning countless tournaments and recording 12 hole-in-ones in his career, including 2 on the same weekend at different courses.

Memories Timeline

  1. I’ve been lifelong admirer of my Uncle Murphy. My mother (his sister Dorothy) often told me how Murphy overcame a life-threatening injury in his youth, attended Oklahoma University and then made a career in the regulation of oil & gas. Murphy was always kind and encouraging to me. Much later in life I began to appreciate and share his passion for golf. May the Lord comfort his sons and their families in this time of loss.
