Martha Jane Dixon

Martha Jane (Duke) Dixon, 92, of College Station, Texas passed away on April 28, 2024.  Martha was born on June 10, 1931 in Water Valley, Kentucky to Opal (Stephens) Duke and Troy Duke. She studied at Hickman County Public Schools, riding a horse with her brother Marcell to attend elementary school. After graduating from Fulgham High School, she continued her education and graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Mayfield, Kentucky. She proceeded to put this knowledge to work in retail and accounting roles with local businesses. Later, she enjoyed registering students for classes when she worked for Texas A&M University. Her favorite roles, however, were being Mom to her two sons and a Homemaker for her family.

On January 27, 1952 she married Joe Boris Dixon from the Beelerton community in Hickman County, Kentucky. The ceremony was in between Sunday School and the church service since “everyone would already be there!”

Her Christian faith was an integral and important part of her life. Martha grew up in Mount Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was church pianist. She became United Methodist after her marriage to Joe. She was actively involved with Grace UMC while living in Auburn, Alabama and A&M UMC while residing in College Station, Texas. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School, participating in women’s circle, and being active with United Methodist Women.

Martha’s volunteer work was focused and carried out over decades of faithful service to the community. She loved getting to know Aggies at A&M Wesley Foundation, where she was known as “The Muffin Lady” for bringing in home baked blueberry muffins every week. Her service ranged from being a board member and Treasurer to washing dish towels after weekly student dinners and baking for the Aggie Pie Supper. At the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, she was in the first class of volunteers that cataloged materials prior to the current facility’s opening. She then enjoyed serving the Education unit, preparing materials and hosting the thousands of school students that visit each year.

Martha loved her neighbors as well. She enjoyed inviting the neighbors to her house each year for the National Night Out program.

Martha is survived by sons Mark (Tamra) Dixon of Georgetown, Texas, and Paul (Deirdre) Dixon of Tampa, Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Chandler, Alaina and Brynach Dixon of Georgetown, Texas; Caneel (Mattias) Cooper of Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia, Carlin Dixon of Ft. Worth, Texas and Cowboy Dixon of Nashville, Tennessee.

Mrs. Dixon requested her body be donated to the Texas A&M School of Medicine Willed Body Program for medical research.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11:00am at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840. Please designate the Joe Boris and Martha Jane Dixon Graduate Endowment in Soil Mineralogy in the memo line of the check.
