Born in: Avery, Texas
Resided in: Bryan, Texas

Marie Cox Storey, mother to Mark Storey and Lisa (Storey) Olivieri, passed away on March 3, 2023, at 2:25AM after a long battle with severe dementia. Her final moments were spent peacefully at Crestview Memory Unit in Bryan, surrounded by family and close friends.

Known for her love of others, her community, and her beautiful grandchildren, Marie will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Marie’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life not the sadness of her passing. She is survived by Mark and wife Lyn (Russell) Storey of Avery, Texas; Lisa and husband Mark Olivieri of College Station, Texas; and her six grandchildren: James Storey and fiancé Ashley, Thomas Storey and wife Taylor, Sarah Storey, Ryan Olivieri and wife Elizabeth, Philip Olivieri, Nick Olivieri and wife Samantha, and great-granddaughter Emily Olivieri as well as many dear relatives and friends.

Marie was the daughter of Jeff and Mae (Lillard) Cox of Red River County Texas. She attended Avery High School and graduated in 1945. Marie worked as an inventory and file clerk at Red River Army Depot for three years after high school. James Benton Storey was her high school sweetheart and they married September 5, 1948. Marie supported Benton throughout his academic and professional career working with him beginning with 4 H club events in Cass County Texas, then as a secretary for the head of the Meteorology Department at A&M, followed by working for the head of the Education Department at UCLA. After returning to A&M with Benton in 1958 she continued her secretarial work on campus and at home with the Texas Pecan Growers Association. They made their home in College Station in 1958 where they were active in the A&M United Methodist Church serving in many different capacities. Marie served as a Sunday school teacher for small children for over twenty years and adored her friends in the Doers Sunday School class.

Marie was proud and devoted to her grandchildren. They have many special memories of her. The Storey grandchildren, James, Thomas, and Sarah were fortunate to each live for a time, while attending A&M, in an adjoining studio apartment. Thomas recalls: “Gram made the best, butteriest, most delicious blueberry muffins I will probably ever eat. You could taste in them the deep and abiding love and selfless pride she had for her family. While staying in the adjoining apartment during undergrad, she was fully invested in my life, always wanting to hear how school was going, how work was going, had I met any girls I liked. She had a playful and generous spirit that always put me at ease.” Sarah has the same appreciation for the blueberry muffins and adds: “I was able to talk with her about my horticultural studies, farm work, and she in turn shared with me her own experiences of farm life.” The Olivieri grandchildren, Nicholas, Philip, and Ryan also have fond memories of time spent with Gram. Nick remembers as a child going on walks to the park with Gram after spending the morning playing blocks and trains. She was always so patient and kind.  Philip remembers fun games of dominos as well as trying to teach Gram how to use the computer. Philip also looked at Gram as an exemplary person.  Ryan recalled, “I remember walking to Gram’s house after school. We’d play dominoes while eating bluebell mint chocolate chip ice cream and LOTS of chocolate syrup. She always made sure to have my favorite treat in full supply.”

The ceremony will be held at Callaway Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 1PM and the family will receive friends at 12 noon, guests are encouraged to honor Marie by wearing pink attire.
