Born in: Austin, Texas
Resided in: College Station, Texas

Kathleen “Kay” Paddock Parker passed into her heavenly life January 25, 2021, at the age of seventy-six, after fighting ovarian cancer for over five years.

Kay was born and raised a Texan and has lived in College Station for over forty-one years, with her husband, Steve, to whom she has been married fifty-five years. She was born in Austin, TX, the child of Virginia Baker Paddock and Harold Joseph Paddock. She grew up cheering the Longhorns, but quickly became an “Aggie for life,” when Steve took her to her first Texas A&M football game.

Kay began her career in the nonprofit field in 1984, beginning as a Smoke Stoppers and Be Trim instructor with Scott & White Hospital, followed by working at BVCASA (Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse) as the Director of Prevention Services. She retired as the Vice-President of Community Impact at United Way of the Brazos Valley in 2011.

Kay was responsible for the development and implementation of the 2-1-1 Texas Information and Referral system in Bryan/College Station and the Brazos Valley 7-county area. For her work at the local, state, and national levels promoting and advocating for 2-1-1, she received the Clare B. Rothmeyer Award from TAIRS (Texas Association of Information and Referral Systems), and the Public Citizen of the Year Award from the National Association of Social Workers, Brazos Valley. She served on the AIRS (Alliance of Information & Referral Systems) National Accreditation Site Review Team for ten years. And, during her tenure with her non-profit work, she also attained her LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) and worked for twenty-five years in the substance abuse field.

Kay was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, and as Chair of the Outreach Commission. In addition to serving her community through her church, Kay volunteered as a Docent at the George Bush Presidential Library, as a Board Member of the Brazos Valley Community Action Agency, as a member of the Community Development Block Grant Joint Review Committee for the City of College Station, and as Election Judge for the City of College Station. Kay was also an alumnus of both Leadership Brazos and Leadership Texas.

Kay valued her faith, family, and her friendships throughout her life, always celebrating holidays and birthdays throughout the year with family. She and Steve were fortunate to be able to travel, visiting eleven countries, numerous cities, as well as National Parks within the U.S., very often traveling with friends.

Kay is survived by her husband, Steve Parker and two beautiful children, Shannon Parker and Kyle Parker, both of College Station, TX. She has three wonderful grandchildren, Brandon Van Stavern, Carrollton, TX, Cole Parker, Courtney Parker, and two great-grandchildren Everly Grace Parker, and Paxton Wilkinson, all of College Station, TX. She is also survived by her cousins, Denny Mounce, Burton, TX, Shirley Gelineau, San Antonio, TX, and Karen Green, Williams, AZ.

There are four couples that have been fast friends that Kay would like to acknowledge that sustained, loved and counseled her and Steve for the most part of sixty years. They are Cindy and Buzz Campbell both deceased, Linda and John Rochner, Carol and Marvin Morris, and Gloria and Jack Mathews. All are forever friends among oh so many more.
The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Capen and his nurse Tina Nelson for their loving care and friendship at Baylor Scott and White in Temple, Hospice of Brazos Valley (Especially Natalie Garcia) and St. Thomas Episcopal Church of College Station.

I just saw this and my heart is broken. I wasn’t aware she was ill. I am so sorry. She was one of the sweetest, giving, hardest working ladies I know. She has touched so many lives and loved by so many.

We are praying for your comfort and peace. Much love to you from the both of us!

    • Bev,
In August 2015, just before our planned fiftieth anniversary trip to Europe she was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer. We knew it was ultimately terminal. Like the Kay Parker you’ve known she fought with ever fiber of body. Now there is this huge 55 year hole in my life. We loved your thoughts. Thank you both for you love and friendship. I’ll miss her so.

  15. Dear Steve,
A few weeks ago a young handsome man fixed the leak in my yard. Me being nosey found out that he was Kay Parker’s grandson. Of course I screamed and began to profess how much I loved his grandmother. I told him we went on trips together and she was a lot of fun!!! He told me she was sick so I put her on my prayer list. I have a feeling that heaven just got more fun!!! May God bless you all.

  16. Rest in peace Kay. You were a bright light in every room. Truly genuine. You are missed by so many lives you touched. Until we meet again. My condolences to the family.

  17. Steve and family,
What a smile! What a laugh! The world had an Angel who walked among us and now has gotten her wings. I met Kay in 1987 and worked with her at BVCASA. Kay is one of those women who taught me how to walk with the grace and dignity of a sober woman alcoholic. She had a way of making points with stories I will never forget. She helped so many. Rest now honey, your work here is done.

  18. Deepest Sympathies to Steve, Kyle, Shannon and the whole family. Kay was important to me in so many ways. I will miss her great humor and bright smile.

  19. The world lost an amazing woman. Kay was beautiful inside and out! She and Gloria pointed me on my path of helping others many years ago. Kay was so supportive and loving. She will be missed.

  20. Steve — I wanted to share my sympathies and prayers with you and your family. I can’t express how much I enjoyed getting to know you & Kay during Aggie basketball games. She demonstrated such strength through her battles with cancer and always had a joyful smile. She will be missed!

  21. Oh, Doreen,

She will be back with me for the 2021-2022 season, you may not see her but know that she is there.

  22. What a beautiful soul! Met her through helping our Blinn Students as a Standardized Patient. Such a tough loss for this family. Praying for you all especially you Steve! Take care.

  23. My condolences to Steve and family. Having worked with Kay for several years at United Way I have many fond memories of Kay. She was always diligent about her grant budgets and would keep me on track as well. Hosting annual events with her was a pleasure. One of my favorite memories was the trip to Caldwell to visit a friend of hers that had the most elaborate Christmas decorations that I have ever seen in one place. I will also miss the many lunches. I will always remember her.

  24. Dearest Parker Family,
Sad to hear about Kay’s passing. We knew each other through BVCASA and Weight Watchers. Kay was a humorous and delightful speaker. Please accept my condolences and prayers for all of you.

  25. Steve,
I am just now reading about Kay. I am so sorry for your loss. She was one of a kind. She was always thinking of others. Both of you were so good to my brother Joe. I will be praying for you and the rest of your family.
