Jui-Chao "Jeanne" Yu

Jui-Chao “Jeanne” Yeh Yu, was born June 14,1943, in Miaoli, Taiwan and lived to celebrate her 80th birthday this year. She was the youngest of 8 children and lived with several of her older siblings growing up. Jeanne attended college at Tamkang College of Arts and Sciences in Tamsui, Taiwan, majoring in English Foreign Language and graduating with her BA in English in 1964. This is where she met her college sweetheart, Hung-Chih Yu.

After college, Jeanne taught English at Miaoli High School. In 1965, Hung-Chih went to the United States to study at Texas A&M University. In 1966, without knowing the Yu family’s dialect, Jeanne followed her heart and courageously left her family to live with Hung-Chih’s parents in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She worked diligently that year to become fluent in their language. In 1967, she left Taiwan for the United States to marry the love of her life, Hung-Chih. He became her lifelong companion, celebrating 56 years of marriage, and, ultimately, her loving caregiver for nearly two decades.

They were married on August 27, 1967, at Texas A&M’s All Faiths Chapel in College Station, Texas. The ceremony was organized with the help of Hung-Chih’s professors and professors’ wives. They soon after had 3 children, Li-Wei, Li-Hsi, and Yvonne. Jeanne was an amazingly dedicated, selfless, and hard-working wife, mother and friend, who took care of other children while raising her own, as Hung-Chih worked and received his Masters degree.

She later worked full-time as a data processor at Agency Records Control, in College Station which became Agency Management Systems, where she worked until retirement. While working full-time, she never sacrificed her time with her children, her husband, or her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was also a staunch supporter of her children’s academic, musical, and athletic endeavors.

She and Hung-Chih rarely missed a game, recital, or awards ceremony. She was always teaching them, advocating for their academic, mental, physical and spiritual growth and continually encouraging them to achieve at their highest abilities. She never failed to have a meal prepared and extra for those who might visit unexpectedly, so they would feel welcomed into her home.

After their second child, Li-Hsi, was severely burned in a house fire in 1971, Jeanne came to know the love of Christ, thanks to the generosity and care given to her family from the Discovery Group of First Baptist Church of College Station. Jeanne was very involved with First Baptist up until she became ill with early onset Alzheimers in 2005. She took her children to church every Sunday and Wednesday possible and led gently but undeniably by example. She was diligent in prayer so they might all have a relationship with Jesus. She also prayed for Hung-Chih to come to know Christ. God’s acts of provision were always perfectly timed while she trusted Him in the waiting. So many prayers were answered and with her persistent faith, God used her to lead her entire family to Christ.

Her ministry also included volunteering once a week, to pray for others for an hour in the prayer chapel, working in the nursery during church so young families could listen to God’s word while she cared for their children, and quilting with the women’s group. She always served with such joy and a smile with her sweet yet unbending spirit. She knew no strangers because of her contagious smile and laughter. Her and Hung-Chih were avid mall walkers and knew the workers at each store and interacted with them daily, spreading their joy as they walked. They were also able to enjoy traveling all over the world together after Hung-Chih’s retirement.

While Jeanne was able, she was well-known for her famous egg rolls. She would make hundreds at a time to deliver to friends all over town. Everyone would light up as she would walk up to their homes. She taught her children so much about giving through this (and many other) acts of kindness. Not only was Jeanne a great cook, she was also extremely creative and artistic. She drew and painted, gardened, bird-watched, sewed, crocheted, knitted, quilted, and her children and grandchildren would always receive cards for birthdays with her special drawings on them.

Jeanne was known as Ah-Ma to her seven grandchildren: Grace, Daniel, Lily, Coco, Abby, Zach, and Elie. Her strength, never ending silliness, playfulness and her love for them is evident in the love and admiration that they all have for her. She was a force of positive and fun energy from which they learned so much about life and love. She was tireless and selfless with her love for them. They were her pride and joy.

Jeanne taught her children scripture and the prayer of salvation at early ages. She also loved singing “Jesus Loves Me” to her grandchildren and if Jeanne had one wish, it would be for all to know the love and mercy of her precious Lord Jesus who died for our sins to have a relationship with each of us. This is what she would share, if she could:

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Prayer: “God be merciful to me, a sinner! I believe Christ died for me and that His Precious blood will cleanse me from all my sin. By faith I now receive the Lord Jesus Christ into my heart as my Lord and my Savior; trusting Him for the salvation of my soul. Help me Lord to do your will each day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen”

Jeanne is survived by her husband, Hung-Chih Yu, her greatest love and advocate, who cared without ceasing for her. She is also survived by their children and grandchildren, Li-Wei and Mary Kay Yu and their children Grace Yu and Daniel Yu, Li-Hsi and Wendy Yu and their children Lily Yu and Coco Yu, Yvonne Yu Dang and her children Abby Dang, Zach Dang, and Elie Dang. She also leaves behind a sister, several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and their corresponding families.

Though we know she is in the arms of her Lord, singing and dancing and praising God, she will be greatly missed. To our precious Jeanne, Mom, Ah-Ma, we will see you again soon.
