I met Jean sometime in the early 60’s when she was a hostess at Clayton’s Restaurant on Texas Avenue. My family ate there a lot and she was one reason; always a light–always an utter joy. I can still picture her clear as a bell; greeting us with what was such a natural and loving welcome (certainly a lost art in today’s times!) Then she introduced me at some point to her son, Robert, who became likely my best friend in junior high and high school. And when the fairly “homely” me didn’t have a date for any dance, he took me–corsage and all. Then I had the utter privilege of doing the best thing I maybe have ever done in my life by being bold enough to go up and meet Gloria at Ralph’s Pizza when Robert and I were there so I could introduce them. He was too shy and refused to go talk to her as he was gawking across the room! And now, they have now been married for over fifty years. I know Jean was always grateful that my “un-shyness” brought her the greatest daughter-in-law imaginable. Jean never lost that “light,” I saw her about two weeks before her passing–and there it was–bright and as shining as ever–age had not dimmed it at all. I have lived in Dallas since college so have seen her just a few times along the way; but she always was and always will be one of my favorite people in my life–a gift of value far beyond these words could ever express. I love you, Jean !!
