Jim was born in Tell City, Indiana in 1946, to parents Pauline Borton and Curtis Howell. Due to the early loss of Curtis in an accident, Jim was raised by Sylvester Berger and his mother Pauline. They provided him with a loving home and a strong foundation. He enlisted in the army at a young age, and served in Korea during the Vietnam War. After the army, Jim decided to pursue a career involving his love of automobiles. He had a long and exciting career in automotive engineering that took him to many wonderful places in this country and the world.
Jim grew up in a loving family, with four brothers, Leslie, Leo, Mark, and Chris, and his sister Susie. His love of family led him to become a wonderful father to Jill, Jana, Sarah, and Andrew. He later met his wife, Catherine Howell, and added two more children, Charlotte and Tim. In Jim’s younger days you could find him near the beach. He’s always had a love of the water. As he got older, he developed a love of horses and other pets. He and his wife, Cathy, opened a wolfdog rescue and worked hard to help animals in need. Jim loved music, and loved to play the guitar. He loved sharing music with Cathy, his children and his grandchildren. Jim has thirteen grandchildren. He loved his family with his whole heart. His family will miss his humor, his willingness to be present and available for all things at all times, and his amazing heart.
Jim was preceded in death by fathers Curtis Howell and Sylvester Berger, and his sister Susie Krause.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Howell, and his children, Jill and Husband Joe, Jana and husband Matt, Sarah and husband Justin, Andrew, Charlotte, and Tim.
In lieu of flowers, Jim and his family request donations to be made to The ALS Association.

Rest In Peace, Jim. You impacted my life. We gave each other almost 30 years, and we were married for 27 of those years. I will miss you and have wanted to call you since you left us. The kids, the grandkids, the animals and I will always miss you❤️
I miss you brother.
You will be missed Jim, all the guys at ADM-WORKS say please rest “Cowboy” Jim.
Jim – you were always so kind and jumped in to help where ever needed. You had a huge heart I’m thankful for the time that you were in our lives. We will meet again
Till we meet again brother
Jim was a dear friend and brother. I think God placed Jim in my life at a time that we each needed a brother to talk to, bounce ideas off and sometimes pray for.
I miss his positive attitude and encouraging presence. He’s a dear brother that’ll be missed.
Jim was one of my high school classmates. He has told me several times over the years how much he enjoyed being a part of our class and growing up in Bremen, Indiana.
He was a man of many talents! He loved music and dancing as well as horses, wildlife, and wolf rescue, and was a well-known automotive body engineer/designer. He was a very caring man with an outgoing personality!
My sympathy to his wife Cathy, his children and grandchildren, his brothers, and his dear mother in Indiana. He will be missed by me and his fellow friends and classmates!

To my dearest friend – thank you for what you have provided me where others failed, because of that I am where I am. May you find peace. You will always be in my heart and thoughts.
Yours truly,
Hijo mío.
Jim was my first mentor when I started my career. We quickly developed a strong bond due to sharing many similar values. I still think about him often and the impact he had on my career and my life. I am deeply saddened to see this news. Condolences to all of Jim’s family and friends. Go rest high on that mountain my friend ❤️.
Even though I knew you were very ill, I didn’t realize how hard it would be to lose you. So glad you are at peace and that your suffering is over. I have many memories of our childhood which I will always cherish.
Jim was a good friend, with outstanding skills. His love for animals is inspiring. God bless you, Jim. We will meet again.
Your friend always.

Jim was a dear friend and colleague that like many mentioned above, he was a man of many talents. I will always cherish his memory but my only regret is I didn’t get to see my dear friend Jim, not for the lack of trying but Jim made it perfectly clear that he was in no shape to have visitors. I really loved Jim from I met him, RIP Jim and my deepest condolences to Cathy and the entire family and friends.
What a beautiful tribute. My deepest condolences. May you all be comforted by these and all of your precious memories. Rest in peace, Jim.
Mr. Howell as I would call him is dearly missed. Although our friendship was not long lived, I thank you for your friendship and support. I already have missed your morning greetings as I would walk into work each day with a smile and chuckle. I thank you for your kind and encouraging words. The world needs more Mr Howells. All of us at Forbes Metal Stamping will never forget you.
My condolences to your family that you will forever ❤️ love.
To Cathy Howell and family,
We just want you to know how sorry we are to hear of Jim‘s passing. He was an amazing, multi, talented guy that we were fortunate to know. I was lucky enough to work with him at Ital Design, Metal Crafters and Freightliner. I enjoyed our phone calls while I was walking my dog. We would put the world to right and talked about the good all days. He was real family guy and often spoke about you (Cathy) and his family. He always said how proud he was of his family, how much he loved his dogs and horses. He also spoke about how proud he was of you Cathy and your barrel racing. We loved how down to earth and original he really was. Always polite, held a door open for any lady, tipped his cowboy hat and went about his day. He was truly a hard worker and a dedicated family man. His talent took him to many places and he was famous for his kinematic modeling skills. No one could touch him on that. No one. My family will miss him. I will miss him.
