Dr. Gerald Gale Wagner passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023. Gale was born in Plainview, Texas, on June 3, 1941. He attended school in Plainview from elementary through high school, and graduated in 1959. Gale attended Texas Tech University from 1959-1963, receiving a BS degree in Bacteriology. On August 16, 1962, he married Beverly Hamilton. They moved to Lawrence, Kansas after graduating, where Gale received his Master’s Degree from Kansas University in Microbiology in 1966, and his PhD in Immunochemistry in 1967.

Gale and Beverly’s first child, Kristin, was born in 1965, and in 1967, daughter Lisa joined the family. After graduating from KU, Gale was offered a Post Doctorate in Microbiology at the Plum Island Infectious Disease Lab, off of Long Island, New York. The family lived in Southold, NY for 3 years. Gale was then offered a research position in Nairobi, Kenya. He spent 6 years in Kenya, working for the USDA to develop a vaccine for East Coast Fever.

In 1977, Gale and Beverly decided they wanted to return to Texas; bringing their daughters back to be close to their grandparents. Gale was asked to be Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology, and Coordinator of International Programs, in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology of Texas A&M University. Gale loved his work in Aggieland, and his students. Graduate students came to work with him from the United States, as well as, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Germany, China and Japan.

Gale received many awards and honors for his research. He received the Bush Excellence Award for Faculty in International Teaching, and the Real Academia Deciencias Veterinarias in Madrid. He was also named a Texas A&M University Provost in 2012. He retired in 2013 after 36 years at the TAMU School of Veterinary Medicine.

In addition to his illustrious career and many professional achievements, his personal life is what stood out most to those who loved him. Gale loved animals, collecting various artifacts from outdoors (“natures” as he referred to them with his children and grandchildren), and creative projects of all kinds. He was affectionately called “Frydaddy” and “Dadada” by his grandchildren, all of whom adored him. He was married to the love of his life for 60 years, and they created a beautiful example of marriage and family, for his children and grandchildren to strive for themselves.

Gale is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter Kristin and her husband, Walter Harry; and daughter Lisa, and her husband, Sean Calliham. His grandchildren Bethany, and her husband, Seth Caldwell; Sara, and her husband, Philip Abrams; Nathan, and his wife, Abigail; Ashley, and her husband, Nick Porter; and Haley Calliham. His six great grandchildren, Roy, Robin and Ronin Caldwell, Murphy and Sammy Abrams, and Oaklynn Kate Harry. And sisters, Sally and her husband H.G. Doyle, Carrie Elizabeth Wagner, and Joanne Fairchild-Kidd and her husband Randy Kidd.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Kristin, I’m so sorry about your Dad. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the beautiful memories you have with him will help bring joy to your hearts. May God bless and comfort you, especially during this difficult time. Lots of love to all of you.

  2. Dr. Wagner was very welcoming to us when we first joined the vet school in 1989 and we will always remember him and is kindness and passion for science. Please accept our condolences and hope his family will find comfort in their memories.

  3. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Wagner family. Dr Wagner was my mentor – without his unflagging encouragement and guidance I would not have earned a PhD. Dr Wagner was my boss – I spent many years in his research laboratory as we sought advances in babesiosis. And Gale was my friend – so many memories of his great sense of humor!

  4. I am sad to hear this and I send my condolences and best wishes to the Wagner family. Our offices were close together and I will always remember his great sense of humor, and his kindness to me.

  5. Kristin & Walter – We are sorry for your loss.
You and your family will be in our prayers.

  6. My condolences to the Wagner family. During the time Dr. Wagner was graduate advisor to Masters and PhD students in Veterinary Pathobiology, it was my honor to assist him in this (just one of his many departmental duties and responsibilities). He touched many lives during this time in seeing many students through their programs. Not only was he my boss, he was a good friend. He is a person I always respected and admired for his many accomplishments.

  7. To the Wagner Family – Gale Wagner was a very important person in my professional life. He served as an amazing mentor, taking me under his wing 25 years ago, and helping me to launch a very successful international program, always with his support, connections, and friendship. Working with him was rewarding and fun, he had a commitment to “pay it forward” and provided so much help to junior faculty. Over the last 10 years, after his retirement, I made many efforts to connect with him without any response. I should have realized sooner that he had undergone some cognitive decline, and I should have just shown up at your home and sat down with him and held his hand and thanked him profusely for all he did for me. Please know that he was a tremendous colleague and friend to me, and I am so grateful for his support and guidance. He made the world a better place, in so many ways!!!!!!

  8. I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Wagner family. Gale was my boss and friend for many years at TAMU and working with him was such a positive experience. There are not many bosses that can create the type of working environment that Gale did. He was fair, but firm and had the respect of all his students and employees. He inspired so many people to go the extra mile and I consider myself fortunate to have known him.
