Franco da Conturbia
March 5, 1936 ~ January 10, 2024
Born in:
Milan, Italy
Resided in:
College Station, Texas
Franco was born in Milan, Italy on March 5, 1936 to Fortunato da Conturbia and Maria Agnese Rota. Franco’s paternal and maternal grandfather were Italian. His maternal grandmother was English with an Hungarian mother. His paternal grandmother was American of Scot Irish origin. Franco attended elementary and high schools in Italy at San Vito al Tagliamento, Portogruaro and Pordenone. San Vito, a rural town, was always close to his heart and had a big impact on his interest in and knowledge of agriculture.
Franco gained a Master’s Degree in Economics (Laurea in Economia e Commercio) from the University of Perugia. In 1962 he married Maria Alessandra Rossi di Schio (Sandra). They had two children: Andrea in 1963 and Laura in 1965. Franco worked in Italy for IBM in Milan then for SAI, insurance company owned by FIAT, in Torino.
He enjoyed both jobs until 1977 when he felt ready for a change and had the opportunity to become his own boss. Franco emigrated to the US and established a company with two partners managing a large cotton farm in Texas. His international background was a contributing factor to make Franco feel at home in Texas. During the following years he also encountered several difficulties. He was helped by good friends and the spiritual assistance of the pastors of St. Mary’s, especially by Father Mike (now Bishop) Sis. Franco never lost his trust in people.
The knowledge acquired in college and several years in farming and in real estate allowed him to include some consulting activities in the latter years of his life.
Franco enjoyed traveling, reading history books and gardening. Work was very important to him but even more important was his family. He cherished all visits of children and grandchildren and the yearly vacation with all his family.
Even through his battle with terminal cancer, Franco never lost his faith in the Lord, his serenity, or his optimism. He was very grateful to the Hospice of Brazos Valley. He called them ” my guardian angels”.
Franco is survived by Sandra his wife of 61 years, his son Andrea and wife Emina Soljanin; his daughter Laura and husband Gary Ferrier; his grandchildren Adam with Cheyeene, Julian with Jamie and numerous relatives.

Dear Sandra and family,
My heartfelt condolences to all of you, especially Sandra. It was always a joy to run into both of you. Franco always had a smile for everybody and was optimistic and full of faith. Whatever the Lord had in mind for him, he was accepting it. Beautiful couple and an inspiration to all. May the Lord fold His arms around you and comfort you during this difficult time. My love to you.
My heart goes out to you, Sandra, Laura and Andrea. It was my privilege to have known Franco. He was gracious and upbeat and so many other good things – just a pleasure to be around. I am grateful for the memories of time spent with Franco and you, his dear family. No doubt he will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by those who knew him.
