Evelyn Marie Vykukal Verwold, known for her fun, cheerful disposition and for going the extra mile for family or friends, died peacefully on July 16, 2022. Her husband, Gene was by her side holding her hand.

Evelyn was born in Caldwell, TX, on July 30, 1939 to Willie and RosaLee Piwonka Vykukal and spent her childhood playing at and then helping work at the family cotton gin. She attended Caldwell High School where through friends she met a handsome, quiet football player Gene. She graduated in 1957 after having enjoyed acting in her senior class play, serving as a cheerleader and being selected Football Sweetheart. Evelyn continued her education at Durham Business School in Austin, TX, and with education behind her moved to Houston, TX, to work at Ingersoll Rand.

On April 19, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart Gene Verwold and following his military service, the couple moved to College Station, TX, where they raised a family and started Razor’s Edge Barber Shop with hometown friend Herb Fedora. Evelyn enjoyed doing the bookkeeping for Razor’s Edge and realizing her aptitude for numbers, she studied income tax preparation and worked at H&R Block and gladly helped family and friends with their taxes. A skilled cook, she learned cake decorating and created beautiful cakes for family members’ weddings. After many years of being a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in College Station, she became a founding member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Evelyn volunteered in many capacities at the church and used her gardening skills to help create and maintain the beautiful grounds. In 2006, she earned the Lumen Gentium Award for all her work.

Friends and family were of prime importance to Evelyn and her home seemed to be frequently visited by Aggie students who came for a respite or home cooked meal. She continued her friendships with her hometown school mates and was instrumental in organizing and corresponding for the 50’s CHS alumni.   Above all, Evelyn loved her family and her most cherished times were the family vacations at Port Aransas, TX.

Preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn is survived by her husband Gene; children Gerald and his wife Jill, and Carla and her husband Curtis Youngblood; grandchildren Aaron Verwold, Amber Verwold, Amber Mills, Tyler Mills, Lauren Youngblood, Abby Youngblood, and Aarick Verwold. She is also survived by sisters Martha Wolf and husband Frank and Linda DeLuca and husband Ernie.

Friends and Family are welcome to a visitation on Friday, July 22, 9:00 -9:50am at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station, Texas.  A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am. After a reception in the church hall, a graveside ceremony will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell, Texas at 2:00

  5. I want you to know I always believed Evelyn was a saint on earth. Now she’s where we know she belongs. Our deepest condolences to all of the family, especially those we know well: Gerald, Carla, Lauren, and Abby. We are so glad we recently had the chance to visit. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with Covid yesterday, so we won’t be able to make it to her services. Know our spirits and many prayers are with you all.

  6. Evelyn reminds me of our aunt Emily. She spoke her mind, was very kind and a “take action “ person. I always enjoyed visiting with her at our reunions at Bower’s lake and Frenstat. I know she is blessed by God’s home for her in Heaven. I will miss her.

  7. Condolences and loving prayers to the family. Rest peacefully with the angels and kiss my Grandma Mildred for me.
