Eddie Mize, 82, of Bryan, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021, in Bryan. A public Celebration of Life honoring Eddie’s remarkable life will be held on a future date. Cremation services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.

Eddie, an unforgettable husband, father, and grandfather was born to Donald and Trula Gilpin Mize, in Iola, Texas on November 24, 1938. Eddie was a family man who put family first at a very early age. Growing up he helped his father in the dairy business milking cows from dawn ’til dusk.

On January 4th, 1959 he married his soulmate and best friend Mary Ergle Mize at Reliance Baptist Church. Eddie and Mary made a beautiful life for themselves, with the center of their world being four sons David, Dale, Daryl, and Donald.

By the 1970’s this hard-working family man who had mastered the art of Dairy Cattle
management and breeding had learned the skills of the A/C and Heating business founding Mize Heating and Air Conditioning – a business still carried on today through his sons and grandsons.

By the late 1980s, Eddie had purchased his own piece of heaven on earth. Windy Hill was a place where he could build a home and an escape for him and Mary, his sons, grandsons, and great-grandchildren. Every day he would make his way to the little piece of paradise tucked away in the trees to create a canvas for memories to be made with his own two hands. There wasn’t a day you couldn’t find him amongst his cattle, building fence, gardening, or giving an old piece of equipment a new purpose. There wasn’t anything Eddie came in contact with that didn’t get left better than he found it.

Eddie or PawPaw as he was called, centered his entire life around his family. Every business decision and personal project he set out to create had one inspiration behind it – to leave a legacy and something better for the next generation to enjoy. He loved his wife, his sons, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than life itself. There wasn’t a single thing those calloused hands, denim blue eyes, or perfectly worn overalls touched without every single one he loved in mind. To know Eddie Mize was like having a direct line to Jesus. He lived by example – inspiring all those he met, helping anywhere he could, and encouraging everything and everyone he touched to do a little bit better. His legacy will continue to be honored, cherished, and preserved for generations to come.

Eddie Mize is preceded in death by his father Donald Lee Mize, mother Trula Gilpin Mize, great grandson Emmett Michael Moerbe, and brother-in-laws Mike Hereford and Mike Havard.

He is survived by and will shine through his loving and faithful wife Mary Lou Ergle Mize, two sisters Donnie Hereford and Doris Havard, brother Woody Mize & wife Leslie, sons David Mize, Dale Mize & wife Karen, Daryl Mize & wife Judy, Donald Mize & wife Monica. As well as his loving grandchildren Stephanie Ingram & husband Richard, Darrin Mize & wife Skye, Jonathan Mize & wife Nicole, Blaine Mize & wife Sarah, Kelly Myrick & husband John, Ben Mize, Jessica Davis, Katelyn Moerbe & husband Tyler, and Travis Mize & wife Jordan. His legacy will continue with great grandchildren Joshlynn Jones, Alexis Mize, Kaleigh Mize, Emery Ingram, Abigail Mize, Kendall Myrick, Everett Ingram, Savannah Mize, Dailen Mize, Kinley Myrick, Easton Ingram, Emmalyn Davis, Emric Moerbe, and Kate Myrick.

The family’s private service will be livestreamed for extended family and friends through the Callaway-Jones, Bryan website on Sat., February 13, 2021 at 11 am. Memorials may be made to Reliance Baptist Church or a charity of your choice, in Eddie’s memory.

Guestbook

  1. I have so many fond memories of Eddie.
I am heart broken for your loss. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.

  2. So very sorry. We will miss him so much. He was always our very cool older cousin. Our prayers are with the whole family and our thoughts are especially with Mary.

  3. Wanda and Tommie Shull
Eddie was highly respected and loved. He will truly be missed. When we were growing up I would go there during the summers, we would have so much fun. He liked picking on us girls. He would make the horse rare up and cause me to fall off, then he would laugh. We thought he was so strong because he would pick up the 100 lb. feed bags like they were nothing. He was my big brother I never had. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.

  4. What can we say? We are so sorry. Can’t help thinking how much not only the family and friends, but also that ranch will miss him. We send our love. Earl and Shirley

  5. Truly heartbroken at the loss of such a wonderful man! Uncle Eddie (and Aunt Mary) took such great care of me in my early college years and I am forever grateful for the memories & time I had with him! What a legacy he left in this family. We will miss him dearly but take comfort that we will see him again someday.

  6. We so enjoyed our time with Uncle Eddie from riding around in the golf cart to working cows with him! We are so thankful for the time we were able to spend with him. Wyatt always asks to go visit Windy Hill and check the hog traps! He will live on forever in our hearts!

  7. I am heartbroken beyond words. We are so sorry for your loss.
Sending prayers and heartfelt sympathy from my family to yours.
Losing a life long friend for me is earthshaking to the core.
May my Best Friend Ed Mize Rest in Peace.

  8. I have so many wonderful memories with Eddie that will be with me forever. He was a great cousin and we had many good times as children when Wanda, Dale and myself would spend time in the summer with him and his family. I was always proud of Eddie and who he was, and grateful for the time we had him here with us. Rest in peace

  11. Uncle Eddie will be missed thank you for all you have done for me and my family. From giving me a job in the summer I had to do summer school in Bryan to looking after Morgan and letting her stay at Mimi’s through college. Letting Morgan and Blake have their Wedding at Windy Hill. Also all the life lessons you taught us as little ones to adults. You will be missed by so many.

  12. a decade my senior and I could never keep up with him, but Eddie always had time to stop and help me when needed. Gonna miss you Eddie Mize. Will be watching for you on Windy Hill.

  14. I will cherish the fond memories of uncle Eddie! He will be missed. Praying for comfort of loved ones. May you rest in peace. I know you are in a better place.

  15. Sorry for your loss, my condolences to the family.
I was lucky enough to meet Eddie while visiting my good friend Mary by Windy Hill. While on one of my visits we went over there fishing and I came home with a dog. Best dog ever named her Windy.
Whenever you’d see him he was such a nice person. The world lost a good one.

  16. Eddie will truly be missed. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Eddie and Mary often but the last time Mom and I went up on “Windy Hill” he took me around with him, setting ground hog traps and then we went to feed the fish in the pond. Even the fish were happy to see him, they all came up to meet him. I feel like he made that impression with everyone. I remember when we were little and Mom would take us kids out to visit Mary, Eddie and the boys. We always had a great time. I wish I could have been around him more often. I love you Mary and family and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. His memory will forever live on.
    Love
Duke & Tina Lykins (Norma’s daughter)

  17. Grandpa Mize was how he was known to my brother and I…..Jason, Justin, Skyler and Beverly Ware send condolences and love to Grandma Mize and Family…..

  18. A really fine man has been called home. To the family, please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. He will be missed, but we will meet again.

  19. It feels like yesterday that I had met Darrin Mize, and moved into a little green cabin to start what would have been the rest of my life as I know it. What I didn’t realize is that not only would I be blessed with one incredible human to do life with but a whole network of family. Next door lived the kindest denim colored eyes I have ever looked into. They belonged to a perfectly worn pair of overalls and a grin that could tell you exactly what you needed without saying a word.

I never had the blessing of a close relationship with a grand parent. Eddie made sure to make up for that and then some. It wasn’t ever with words or lectures but with big deep hugs, short sentences of wisdom in normal conversations, long periods of silence on a porch swing or leaned up against a fence. He always took the time to encourage me to keep working harder regardless of how hard it got. The saying was “you and Darrin are stressed because you care about getting ahead, you are planning for the future. It’s worth it.” I would always explain to him about how hard Darrin worked. He would give me a hug and say girl “He is doing what I taught him to do. I am so glad you walked into his life to balance his work ethic. I am so glad you are part of our family.” He could always ease my angst when I needed it most.

When I was stuck in the crossroads of what to do next in life he made sure to sit me down and tell me to go get a job in veterinary medicine. Go work hard. Go learn all you can. Just remember to work as hard as you can toward what you want to be successful at. I did that. He didn’t have to coach any of us with words or lectures. He was a man that lead by example. He slept outside on a cot every night regardless of the weather. He was up to watch the sun and always told us it was important to do 30 sit ups and 30 push ups every morning. He could out walk me in my fittest form. 3 miles a day down the road plus all the ranch work. Thousands of feet of fence? No problem. You didn’t need inspiration quotes when you met this man. You just watched him and reflected on where you could try a little harder, or be a little better. He always said “you get what you see with me” and he lived it.I loved that.

He made an incredible life for him and his family. From milking dairy cows. To Ai’ing cows. To starting an AC business and breeding cattle. I loved listening to stories he would tell all about cattle, a black horse that was the best in the county at cutting and roping but could strip you off him as well at the next corner. I loved to sit with him and hold his calloused hand and laugh as we watched Savannah gallop around. Never in my life have I felt so loved by a man that didn’t have to love and see me the way he did. He knew my flaws and he knew my strengths and yet still always made sure to tell me to just keep going and be grateful.

I remember the first time he looked into Savannah’s little eyes. The entire room glowed. She loved him. She loved his overalls, loved to pick roses for Gammaw with him, share her horse stories and ask him about cattle. She loved to curl up into his lap and sit while he grinned ear to ear and wrapped his arms around her. Last fall we got a call that he had a cow with a prolapsed uterus and was looking for some help. Vannah and I loaded up and drove to our favorite place on earth…. Windy Hill, the place PawPaw built.

As we dallied that cow off between two trucks and worked on her I kept looking up at him and around me thinking to myself – this is the life. This is what you work so hard for. This is what living the dream looks like. This right here, this is it. He giggled at Savannah not being afraid to get her hands dirty and get in there. She was so concerned about momma and the calf. He told her if he could find it and the cow didn’t make it she could have it. The next day we had a calf in a feed sack on the floorboard and we got a steep learning curve in bottle calves. He would call for updates and ask for photos. Savannah learned so much. Another lesson from the heart that didn’t require coaching or lectures just the experience of doing the work. I am so grateful.

In October the whole clan gathered at the Hill to have a little Halloween fun. He was SOOOOO excited for all of us to be there at the same time. He made a fancy carpeted hay wagon with solar lights. He laughed at us painting the kids faces and sat around the campfire with us. We laughed a lot. I loved watching him with all the kids and watching him take it all in. You could always tell he was grateful for the littlest things. The things a lot of us in today’s world forget to sit down and take in. D and I drove them home that night. He gave us “the look for it” the whole way and when we dropped him off. We laughed about it. But it was a memory I won’t ever forget. When we left, D forgot his phone in their car. PawPaw was quick to tell Gammaw to tell Darrin, “Gotta drive me home but can’t remember your own phone.” I giggle as I think of this. It was an Eddie Mize signature.

Sweet PawPaw went to be with the Lord. Oh how I am going to miss watching him with his sons, grandsons, and great grand children. I am going to miss those denim colored eyes, perfectly worn overalls, and that little grin standing waiting on a hug. I am going to miss the sound of him on the tractor feeding cows off in the distance as his family gathered on his piece of heaven he built. I am going to miss watching a little red ranger come up the drive. I am going to miss his silent direction when my heart is torn between decisions. I am going to miss his quippy remarks to Gammaw. I am going to miss him giving me a hard time about building a fence by myself – “well Skye, you just put up two posts in a straight line, tie a string between, and start putting posts along the line. It’s not hard.” I am going to miss watching Darrin with his grandfather. I am going to miss watching him marveling at the sight of his great grandchildren. It’s a void that won’t ever be filled, but a legacy that will be honored and replicated for generations to come.

I don’t think anyone is ever ready to face loss head on. We can’t ever predict it. But what a blessing it is to have these kinds of humans in our life. The kind of people that mold you without ever forcing you to make a decision. The kind of human that makes you a better human for knowing them. I am so grateful for every ounce of Eddie Mize in Darrin Mize even when they drive me mad – it is those little things that make him so special. The work ethic, the relentless focus, the ability to call it like it is whether you like it or not, the value of family, the importance of building a legacy for the next generation… the little things that make an even bigger picture so much better but you don’t see them ’til you take a step back to reflect upon them.

I am sure going to miss you PawPaw, but I am so grateful for every single day you blessed my life. I’m forever in debt to you for sharing your life, wisdom, and family with a girl you sure didn’t have to share it with or love out loud. Thank you for helping to raise Darrin Mize into all that he is today. For giving me a father and mother in law that took me in as their own like you did. For raising strong men in the family to set examples for what our little girls should look for in the future. For giving me the perfect extended family with sisters that keep me grounded and genuine. I’ll be sure to give Gammaw a hard time for you now and again. I’ll work my tail off to build that barn we talked about for hours about during our last conversation on the porch swing and implement your genius yet practical ideas. I am so grateful for you and I promise to continue to chase my dreams with the tenacity and work ethic you exemplified until your very last day here with us. I will also work on my not so green thumb you tried desperately to cultivate by sending me home with plants I never could keep alive. I love ya.

  20. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Eddie. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. May he rest in peace. We are praying for the family.

  21. So sorry to hear of cousin Eddie’s passing He was one of the good ones. Our thoughts and condolences to Mary and all his family.

  22. From my earliest childhood memories our family had a very special friendship with the Mize family. I am grateful to have known such a wonderful family and especially for Eddie’s life long friendship with my brother, Malcolm. God called his special warrior home and he will be missed.
Prayers for Mary and the entire Mize family✝️

  23. One of the memories I have of Eddie is when the boys were very young and they were fighting.
He made them kiss each other and told them “your brother is your brother all your life.” I don’t know where he got that bit of knowledge but I thought it was impressive. He and Mary raised four commendable boys to be
    good men.
I am so thankful, he didn’t suffer long.

  24. Eddie was a lifelong friend who could always be counted on “to be there”. He was rock solid, honest, trustworthy, and dependable in all ways. Mary Lou, you and Eddie were the perfect match, and there will be a big void in your life now. Just lean on the Lord and your family and friends for support. You have been special since I met you in the 4th grade at Consol.,and I’m here to help in any way I can. Your friend, Gordon

  25. Eddie, Lived every precious moment of his life to the fullest. He created so much for his family to participate in and places to enjoy . I think of him as a Renaissance man; so accomplished in many ways; his paintings hanging on the walls of Windy Hill home, picking up his guitar to play sitting on the porch of Windy Hill, all of this in addition to owning a business & ranching. My loving sister provided the home/nurture that fueled his creations. This is a tribute to two lives well lived. All our love and blessings to you, Mary Lou, and to all of your dear family. Martha & Neil

  26. I am so very sorry for your loss. Words
Can not express my heartfelt sympathy
For you and your family. I have fond memories of Mr. Mize. He was a good man for sure. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for yall. Your family has always had a special place in my heart. I am praying for you & your family.

  27. Dear Donald and Monica:

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. May our gracious Lord hold you and the rest of your family in his loving arms and provide you comfort and peace.
